Dr Rossi / Gabro / Forza Aprilia Falco chip

#1 Post by flatlander » Tue Sep 25, 2012 11:12 pm

Ok all I recently acquired a Dr Rossi chip for open airbox and exhaust which I have fitted and am currently running .... thats fun :)

......and so in my usual gung ho way went on to acquire a Gabro chip which I plan to try next again open airbox etc all of which leads me to the point which is Ed / Forza Aprilia has sent me the first draw at his Falco chip. This is one that has been discussed on a couple of few of the fora so ....

My idea was to compare the Gabro and Dr Rossi but I thought that it would be churlish to not share the information now that we have the three to compare together

My thoughts are to use the three one after the other in similar circumstances and report comparative feel for each one. Commuting means I will be using the same routes in similar circumstances and have an "airtfield" section I can use to compare revs etc .

not very scientiofic but then not meant to be as that would open up far too many specific questions and scenarios

So for example :

Dr Rossi

I find this sharpens start up so that the bike starts quicker and needs less choke, I am told it uses some itiming mods. I find that most of the benefit or noticeable difference is from 50 mph upwards and certainly in what I would call the useable speed and power range.

I have "estimated" that the revs would equate to between 7 and 8 k for the 100-110 range and the whole feel is similar to having overdrive on a car . In that it feels like it revs less for the same torque / power.

Acceleration can be deceptive and more rapidly than normal find yourself in licence loosing area if not careful.
It did seem to reduce the sharpness of the roll off when decelerating which can be a little surprising at first. Fuel economy I would say slight improvement even though more looning about appears to take place.

Overall would I buy one again oh yes lots and lots of fun :smt003

Anyway just first notes Ill try and do some kinfd of comparison table but int he meantime please suggest anything I should test for within reason and whether it might be of any interest outside of my head :smt003
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

pull through the gears - i.e., start at 30 mph in 6th then open throttle hard to accelerate to 70 - see what pick up is like

seeing if you can force an over run ... some people like / hate that

look forward to it

It will be very interesting to hear your findings but we need to remember these are for how the chips affect your bike and won't necessarily translate to all other bikes with different set-ups. Hopefully, however, they will give a good clue.
I know that Gabro supplies different maps for different configurations so I guess your "experiment" only looks at one of his maps - but it should be for a map that is right for the bike.

I did stumble upon the Forza chips on ebay and the description did sound hopeful.

Looking forward to hearing your report :smt004

yes but no andy

one of the chips i ran a few years ago - I think it was the yank arrow clone, was a bugger for running rich and over running - very noticeable at the time

So what did it do on the over run?

Mine pops and bangs but that's because I need to adjust the CO levels on a closed throttle and until now I've had nothing that can measure the CO levels.
Just need to make some adapters to be able to do this now ............

all the chips will be set for ipen airbox and cans which I figured was a good halfway point between obsessive over modification :smt002 and standard

Did forget to mention the Rossi does have a fairly nice crackle and pop at times but not highly consistent have done the airfield tests from a rolling start of between 30-40 ish up to a waymarker, (Ineed to emasure the distance) and the IAS above.

One thing I do notice is that being less revvy at higher end makes tihe prospect or long trips at higher speeds seem more comfortable

popped banged and farted - but enough about hanna

seriously, went from standard falco chip to this one and suddenly was popping away when you closed the throttle. switched to a different chip - no more over run - so my thought at the time was it was the chip not CO levels or anything else

and to add as well for geoff - I am looking forward to your findings for your bike - I suspect that the gabro chip will come out the best

indeed, I would suggest that for those who merely want to mod a bit then get a straight plug in system the gabro chip is probably the best solution

me - I still swear by my original renegade +1 chip... especially as the hobbit has an inferior mark 3 version :)

I don't understand this comment above - to my understanding for the bike to be running less rev's the gearing has to change not the ECU chip.

OR do you mean that it causes less vibrations at higher rev's?

All related - all affecting the mixture on a closed/closing throttle. I reduced mine popping by playing with the map in my PCIII - but it's not fully sorted.

ever used overdrive on a car well yes it changes the gearing but its just a similar feeling I can only tell you it feels less revvy.

It may be a question of needing a better description such as it feels smoother and less urgent but can catch you out by looking down and thinking fek when did I hit 89 ! :smt017 Because you are not feeling the same drive or pull to get there maybe because it changes fuelling an timing it burns less to get there so is not working as hard ... no idea just feels like having overdrive on a car that silent push when it droips about a thousand revs as you drop the overdrive on is the closest I can think to describe it .... its not a bad thing it smooths the ride out especially at higher speeds and feels like the response is improved without necessarily increasing top end

Without wishing to put a damper on anything I figured a bout a week for each chip which is normally about 400-500 of your actual shitty weathered riding would give me a good idea.

Without trying the others but assuming there will be some similarity then I would say of nowt else get one of the buggers they're great ! Lol

Seriously though that gives me tone for a road duals m ways hill roads ( cat fiddle Buxton) and the airstrip ;) so should allow for at least an informed opinion and you know how we all live an opinion:)
