Oil everywhere !!!!

#1 Post by DazBIke » Fri Apr 13, 2007 10:31 am

On the way in to work this morning about 2 mile out of Frome, come up to
a roundabout, i start banging down the gears and my foot kept slipping
off the gear leaver. I look down to see my left leg and left side of the
bike including the rear wheel, covered in engine oil !!!! Oh chap!!
I let it cool down then limped home. it didnt aprear to be leaking too
much by the time i got home.
I think that it might have been over filled at the last service the other week. Gave
then a call today and they seem quite happy to have a look at it. Bit
pissed off, but what can you do! :(

Anyone know of anything else it could be other than being over filled?
Anything i need to check?

thanks.

Left hand side?, drain plug and oil filter housing is that side.

I would be suprised if it was because of overfilling though :smt017

Yeah left hand side.
I'll have a better look when i get home, but it looked like it was coming out of a
number of places which makes me think the oil pressure has built up to the piont
it leaks.

Yup I had this too a couple of weeks ago after MOT.

It was the hose on the top of the oil cooler on the front of the bike. It had sprung the "safety" clip and spewed all the oil out onto the road, my boots trousers and bike. I replaced the clip with a jubilee and filled it back up with oil. No problems since but it might be worth a look see just to make sure it ain't that.

Check the rubber oil hose that runs to the oil tank near the oil filter.

Item No 14 on this pic

Mine got a split in it a few weeks ago and spewed oil all over the back tyre and underside of the bike.

If the breather hose that plugs into the airbox bets blocked that will also cause oil to spew out everywhere.

It sounds like the feed from the oil tank into the engine, in fact this was the subject of the one and only recall by aprillia on the falco if it's not split check out the clips.

I didnt get time this weekend to have a good look as i was at
Thruxton all weekend. However i did notice the the thread on the
oil filler cap has gone! Now my question is; would this be the problem
or an effect of the problem if you know what i mean?

thanks for all you help chaps ;)

Yes the oil could be coming from a loose filler cap but that would be easy to spot.
