right relay ?

#1 Post by fatboy » Tue Sep 04, 2012 9:18 am

Just recieved a starter relay, the 2 pin connector from relay to loom has 2 wires, the connector from loom to relay is 2 pin but 3 wires :smt017
Have I got the wrong one again

Edit. may have answered my own question !
Here's the nothings ever simple bit.
dont have the old relay to compare, lost in a recent house move, have not looked at the bike in the 2 years of my legal battles with DVLA,bike been in mates workshop but he is convinced the old relay was 3 wires to 3 wires,
just compared wiring on new relay,yellow/red from loom meets yellow/red on relay, makes sense ?

This is the 50v relay I took off mine. One red/white wire. One blue/white/black.
New one came in a box for an aprilia atlantic 125. Can't remember what it looked like but it plugged in ok.

I had to swap the connector over on my one but it works fine.

Mine was a straight fit connector wise. Might have swapped the little rubber house between the two but that was it.

Is the relay another crap Aprilia component that should be swapped out? When I start mine sometimes it sounds like the starter motor is doing half a turn then I get the sluggish feeling you get from a flat battery (my battery is the uprated one and kept on trickle charge when not in use). Could this be the relay or is it more likely something else?

Thanks guys, the relay IS for an Atlantic 125 so should be good.
Wish i could say the same about Parcelfarce......
I ordered a rear paddock stand Monday evening, paid an exta £9.90 for Express 24 delivery which I foolishly thought meant delivered within 24 hours............................................................................................................................tick tock, tick tock

Wayno, have a look at all your battery connections to starter and earth. A crudded up connection will give you shagged battery symptoms were as relays tend to work or not work. Could be starter motor on its way out

The battery terminals look ok, I'll check back through the connectors and see how they look. But as you say electricity is witchcraft, unfortunately I can't burn the witch.

The ones they fitted to the Falcos and other bikes of that era tend to build up contact resistance. The earlier Falco ones were also only 50amp devices.
So, yes, they aren't great and can let you down.

Griff swears that the ones Aprilia is supplying now are fine.

The lower cost solutions (of decent relays) tend to be the ones supplied by scooter assassins and a compatible Yamaha part (details posted on the forum several times - search function should locate)

Bought mine from AJ Sutton for about a tenner, it was listed as part equivalent to AP8112927. They do genuine aprilia ones too, a snip at 40 quid.

I had the lethargic starter action that Wayno described.
Good battery, just off the optimate and sometimes it would just do half a turn and stop.

I did three things at the same time.
Took the panels off, which was easier than I expected, even on my own.
I cleaned all the connectors and switches I could find and checked for tightness.
Changed the switchgear for one with a light switch so I could turn the lights off while starting.
Changed the relay.

Been fine since, it was a lottery before.
