Anyone live Scarborough / North Yorkshire way?

#1 Post by danowat » Wed Apr 11, 2007 2:05 pm

I am doing a shake down run up to my Brothers in Cayton a week on Sunday (20th April), anyone suggest any nice riding routes around the area?.

I will be riding from Norwich, so anything "on-route" would be cool :smt003

Hi Dan. Sorry I don't live up there but I am planning a trip up north around that w/e.

Did you mean sunday 22/4 or 20th which is a friday?

Nothing concrete yet but if weather looks half reasonable I am heading up the East coast to Northumberlandshire and then onto Scotland for a day or two in that period. Similar reason - shakedown for the France trip.

Perhaps we can do some of the route together?

The bit I always hate is getting past the Wash. Don't have the local knowledge to avoid the A17.

One road I can recommend though is from Horncastle to Caistor - B1225. Unless I just got lucky there was nothing at all on it for miles and it's nicely curvy.

Yup, 22nd, damn my crappy calander reading skills........

I would WELL be up for taggin along with you, as with you, the weather will be the deciding factor.

I am planning to leave about 8-9am and end up at Cayton for about 1pm, should give plenty of time, I am going to be "luggaged up", so it's not going to be a fast ride :smt003

Splendid !!

I was going to leave it all to the last minute and just wing it. But it would be great to have company for a large chunk of the ride up so I'll see about riding Sunday 22nd too.

I'll get in touch nearer the time as to my exact plans - meanwhile I'll add my voice to the call for good roads from Norfolk to Yorkshire.

Anyone?

Hi Dano

Here goes – assuming you take Fausto's advice and go to Caistor:

Make your way to Brigg on the B1084.Then head for the Humber Bridge (£1.20 toll) and over to the North bank and follow signs to Beverley (8 miles) plenty of parking in the town square if you need a break by then).

Option 1 highly recommended
Take B1248 to Malton (Biker café at Fimber roundabout)
Straight through Malton and on B1257 to Helmesley (big bike meeting place in the square).
Then head East on A170 to Scarborough

Option 2 more direct but less fun
Take A164 to Driffield then round Driffield and take B1249 to Scarborough.

All the roads inland of Scarborough are great (A170 is probably the busiest). If you have time take the coast road up to Whitby then head inland and south across the moors to Pickering before heading home.

Let me know you plan and I might be able to meet up at the bridge and take you through the best bits and keep you off the busy boring roads.

Hope this helps

Sounds like a plan, so far the forecast says no rain, as long as the forecast says no, or very little rain, I will be coming, I am hoping to leave home around 8am, that means I should be around about the Humber bridge (and hunting for my first fuel stop) at about 10am ish.

I will PM you my mobile.

Nice one davshill I was going to suggest option1 (ish)
:smt003 I tend to go up to Seaways, and the road from fimber to bridlington aint to shody.

If you drop in on the humber bridge north car park (turn left just after the toll booths) I will be working the MAG stand at the bikesafe launch/awareness day with Humberside police, I should also have some discount vouchers for Subway St Andrews quay if you are getting hungry.
It would be great to meet some other falconeers :smt045 seeing as you are passing (although I will be in the car :smt012 :smt012 )
It would also be a good meeting point. (just a thought)
Cheers

Just remembered that plod have decided that since there will be extra bikes about this weekend (hopefully) that it would be a good time to £££££ use a mobile speed camera in the area so be aware!!! :smt013 :smt013

So they take you out tell you how to improve your riding so you can go quicker & then when you go away to practice on some of the twistys you fall into their little trap or am I being toooo cynical. :smt011

I think they are deploying it on some of the minor roads around the humber bridge North bank.

I would also be wary on the approach to the bridge from the south bank A15 :smt018

Thanks Moose. I'll drop in and seeya in the carpark anyway and we'll look out for the speed traps at the usual places (Lund, Bainton, Wetwang, Fimber).
