For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

compared to what you are using now Mart, thats a good buy
be aware there is no screen with that - or speakers iirc
the cpu is ok - but not an intel - that could be interesting with windows 8 on first release.....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
I bought a Medion PC a few years ago to run the video projection system at church and it's been very good.
I saw this particular one myself and as I do need to replace my own desktop (which must be more than a decade old now) I did wonder about it .... though I usually build up my own desktops.
Although in years past I've always gone for AMD chips and ATI graphics, in recent times Intel and Nvidea have had the edge .... and I've not tracked the AMD and ATI offerings so closely so not too sure how good the ones in this PC stack up.

I have an EXPENSIVE medion bought for gaming. It has been back twice for repair. the second time was away for 3 weeks. No service updates other then me calling premium rate number to find out what was going on.Came back sounding like a dry clutch with lose bits rattling about inside and a front panel that won't open properly. Needed the SSD drive replacing after only 6mths use?

For the computer try to project what your use would be in a couple of years time as muchas now and look at the opportunity for upgrades rather than replacement so are cards built onto the motherboard or seperate etc. do you play games then look at reviews of the video cards etc
In more practical terms
can it be fixed
can it be upgraded
who can fix it
how much would fixing it cost
if the drives are not SSD thrn look at the spin spped of the disck minimum in a desktop used to be 7200 should be at least 10k plus by now
if you go to crucial .com and check their memory config that will tell you what the max memory you can put in is

'twas just a thought; don't need a new PC right now. But, this Dell is worrying me a bit - it's getting very noisy - fan blowing hard, and it's developed a habit of pausing every now and then, as if it needs to take a few deep breaths and a rest before it carries on.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with AMD processors - I've been putting them in PCs I've built for the last 12 years and they have never, ever failed or given any trouble. A quad-core AMD will handle absolutely everything you can throw at it and more.Aladinsaneuk wrote:the cpu is ok - but not an intel - that could be interesting with windows 8 on first release.....
It's also worth reflecting on the fact that we only have the current state of affairs where you can buy incredibly fast multi-core processors for a few quid, because AMD has given Intel competition in the marketplace and kept them honest.
It's for that reason I buy AMD every time - they're top value and I'm supporting the plucky underdog. And as for that snipe about there possibly being unspecified issues with Win8 - that's the biggest load of codswallop I've ever seen Pete post - and that's saying something...

Actually it was based on a friends experience running a triple core amd CPU on the "trial" windows 8 that is out ATM
It could have been the triple core OR the amd stuff - either way it did not like it
I also have usEd and rate highly many amd chips - even before the mighty Athlon
What cOncerns me is that many of the noises coming out of Redmond once again seem tO be intel centric... It's Beene a few years and a lot of OS's since that particular intel/ms love in but....
Personally I still say its a good pc - and a lot better than what mart is currently using
Me - I would not buy it as it is not an apple ;)

It's all very well having imaginary bragging rights on the latest super-duper zillion-core monster from Intel, but modern processors are so far ahead of the average user's requirements it really isn't funny. Unless you're searching for the Higgs bosun, or trying to calculate Pi to the 978 millionth place, a top of the range chip from Intel or AMD is overkill.
It's just like modern bikes - what road rider is ever going to get close to exploring the limits of of a BMW S1000RRRRRRRR with mega electronic pack?
It's all bollocks, really. Unless you're a professional Photoshop junkie, you really won't be able to tell the difference between an AMD or an Intel quad-core processor. Except in the purchase price.
