Another Chip Query

#1 Post by falcofreddie » Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:25 am

Long time since I've been on here - equally lengthy and boring tale of getting my Falco lined up to be able to use it in this glorious weather :smt005

To cut a long story short, the poor thing has been coughing and spluttering/ largely unrideable through the last few weeks - decided to try and get it sorted and have discovered previous owner has thoughtfully inserted a Mille chip - no, I don't know why either!

My questions are (ascending order of likelihood):
Does anyone have a standard Falco chip they want to swap for a Mille one (v unlikely I know, but, hey, worth trying)?
Where can I get a standard Falco chip (nothing on ebay as far as I can see)?
How much can I expect to pay?

Any ideas/ thoughts welcome - my only comfort recently has been that at least the rubbish weather has reduced the pain of being Falcoless!!

The rsv chip is unlikely to be the problem, but I'd suspect that there are plenty of nearby peeps can lend you a std chip to try and ease your mind

Very unlikely to be the chip

You say it's spluttering - from cold or all the time?

Has it been standing for a while ? If so run some injector cleaner through it

If needs be bring it down to the Hempnall Aprilia centre this weekend

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I would say that it is quite likely to be the chip.

When I changed to a Mille-style 2:1 exhaust, it ran quite badly on a map for a Falco 2:2 exhaust.
Fiddling about with the PCIII and loading a Tuono map (2:1 exhaust made it much better)

Running a Falco set up with a Mille map may be equally problematic.

Yes Andy but the bike has only recently - as I understand it - been misbehaving

Prior to that the bike, and chip, have been fine

But if it has been standing for a month or so with fuel in it....

When I bought my bike, the vendor told me there was a standard chip in the bag of stuff he handed over (baffles, number plates, receipts etc.)

I can send it down to you so you can at least give it a try to see if that is the issue?

I would agree though that if it has only just started misbehaving it is unlikely to be that.

As always, thanks very much for your thoughts and (Sleepyboy) for offer of practical help.

Extended version is that there had always (2.5 years - not a lot of use) been a little roughness/ 'fluffling' from about 2 - 3.5k revs - I guess I just kind of accepted it as a 'twin thing'. Bike laid up over winter - went to my mechanic (yes, he knows his stuff) after this and it seemed to have got worse (he serviced it last year and didn't comment). replaced stale fuel etc. but still problems and it went to local Aprilia dealer with kit to run further checks - improved somewhat, but their input was that it has Mille chip and this likely to be at least adding to problems - hence plan to try Falco chip and see if that sorts it.

Mechanic is checking sources for Falco chip and I'm waiting for him to come back to me - source of request for an idea of cost of standard Falco chip. I think best way forward is to get hold of a falco chip and see if it runs better/ fine.

Sleepyboy - really appreciate your offer - can you pm me with an idea of how many £'s for the chip you mention? - I love the generosity of people on this site, but would rather pay a fair amount if that makes sense!

fluffy running / like a dog between 3500 and 5000 is a feature of the engine.... sort it with pc3 or replacement chip etc

best chip overall to buy would be a gabro - 75 euro or so i think - that may have been a discount price though....

dr rossi chip from griff is meant to be ok - around 35 iirc

standard falco chip - no idea on price....

and even though you changed the fuel, i would still run some injector cleaner - redux at least though old badger pubes raved about a specific product that is apparently better

also, check the air filter - if you have not serviced / checked it, give it a check over - iirc you have a k&n - clean and oil it

I'll dig it out to make sure I have it - if I do I'll put it in post for you.

If it doesn't make a difference send it back, if you want to keep it we will sort out a price.

Thanks Pete - filter just changed; will see how the chip change goes and then also try injection cleaner.

Thanks again Sleepyboy - can you let me know when you are in a position to send the chip and I'll PM you with address details

OK, found my spare chip - it has "PA08" on a sticker on the top.

Does this sound right?
