Start me people start me !!!

#1 Post by cornish mafia » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:54 pm

Hello gentlemen long time no chat but things have been going mad down here in sunny ( or not ) cornwall but i have been tweaking on the bird and she's looking good .........well i think she is anyway...
Right to the point then , the old bird fires up first time every time but i do have it plugged in most nights so no worries there BUT a couple of times now i've been out for a blast and when stopped for a chat or what ever the bike won't start again and the dash re-sets..........Battery is pretty new and charged most nights so i've sort of ticked that one off so now i'm thinking starting relay ? I know the yamaha starter relay fits but a little unsure about which model Yam am i looking for to get the replay from ......

Any other ideas would also be appreciated .....

Can't wait to get some sun on these roads to give the bike a good thrash but as i'm back to work next week so that means it's another month before that happens...... BUGGER !!! :smt009

Won't pee about i'll go straight to the main man and get the right one .....once more thanks for the heads up ....

Got the high level can fitted but am now missing my grab rails due to the indicators being there now .......Goes so much better then it did with the tattie launcher i had fitted before although it's showing up the small glitch now inbetween 3 - 5 thou on the revs , looks good though although not as good as a set of underseat exhausts would ..................maybe !! :smt017

With those symptoms, I'd put the battery back on the list.

nope tim

he has a PC3 and i believe he is due to have his own map done....

I would also look at the battery.... you say you plug in - to a trickle charger or??

an optimate or equivalent is the best solution imho

BUt - check your battery terminals first - they do come undone.....

Yes have fun whistling away i will find some for mine ....ONE DAY !!! :smt003

Did think battery straight away but have to say as it's new ( less then four months ) then i'm fingers crossed it can't be that .......am stripping the back off it today to have a good look for any loose wires .... It is plugged into an Optimate charger and always shows good charge hence the reason for not thinking battery....
And as we speak i'm waiting to hear from Vinnie about whether i can drop my bike to him before i go away to work so the Aprilia man God named Griff can do his magic on it so it's all ready for when i return .....fingers crossed. Having it dyno'd so should have that map for the PC111 once it's done ....

If all that gets done then it's time for a re-spray............BUT the belly pan flag colours are staying !!! :smt005

Check the connections on the bottom of the starter relay and the pos connection on the starter motor - if there is any corrosion on either of these it may be causing a voltage drop when you try to start the bike.

As others have said check ALL battery to starting system connections, even bad earth's can cause this kind of havoc
Even though the battery is fairly new, the only way to eliminate it as a suspect is to 'drop' test it (meter that puts it under load)
Starter motor it self could be 'shorting out' ,field coils breaking down or even magnets detatched
Reylays tend to just stop working but....
