Broken down - no spark

#1 Post by wayofthedarkhand » Mon Jul 02, 2012 12:41 pm

I've already chatted with Paul about this and gave Griff a call earlier today.

I was riding my Falco along the Norfolk country roads, no issues. Smelled a bit rich but was running fine. Swapped bike with my mate. He was taking it super easy when the bike just cut out.

Deeper investigation reveals no spark. After a few conversations i'm thinking its the Alarm, side stand switch, or emergency cut off switch.

One thing I did notice was that there appears to be a small black device with silver lid labeled "302" in front of the battery. What is this? When shook it rattles like hell.

That's the tip over switch. If it's not on its mounting properly and the right way up, your bike won't run

It was mounted properly, so I guess its not that.

I read that it should say "no Start" if the tip over switch has been activated.

Though I have been shaking it around, so hopefully I haven't damaged it.

Bypassed the side stand, so that's not the issue.

Bypassing the alarm next.

Not exactly - that is something that has been poorly reported - particularly on AF1.

The tip over sensor itself doesn't cause the message but is one of the things that may lead to it showing.
The "no start" message shows when you try to start the bike but it fails to start. That is a bit of an over simplification too as not all failures to start generate this message - but I've not created a definitive list ...

Ah ok.

Well the tip over sensor is back in it's usual place.

Side stand bypassed

Alarm/immobiliser bypassed

Emergency off switched checked

Still no spark, a ticking from the front left of bike while it's turning over, and "Diag 1" showing when the diagnostics are attached.

Griff said "Diag 1, 01, -1" is nothing to be concerned about and nothing that would stop the bike from running.

Griff is right on that.

Have a look through the Workshop manual - it's pretty good on explaining the various interlocks and diagnosing faults like this.

Does the bike have an alarm fitted?

Yep, i've bypassed the alarm and immobiliser. Still the bike turns over but there is no spark.

I'm currently charging up the battery again. As the bike lives outside away from the property, there are only a limited number of start attempts I can make before losing battery power.

Carl, with respect

You say you bypassed the alarm?

How - I still would put money on the alarm - removed is very different than bypassed....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

My bike was running wery rich and then stated missing on one pot (the front one) turned out the carbon deposits on the plugs were allowing the spark to short from the electrode to the head without jumping the gap.

The ticking could be an escaping spark, worth trying in the dark.

It's got 4 spark plugs so make sure you buy 4 before you service it

And if checking for a spark ensure you remove all 4, not just one from each cylinder

I've had the plugs out to make sure that they are all in nice and tight.

They don't actually show any sign of richness. They are lovely brown colour.

Still I often think that the bike smells rich, at least when it was running :smt002

It wasn't a Barclays courier vehicle before you had it, per chance?
