Think I got mine from inmoto or speedaway - think most of the dealers would stock them

Mille Link pipe add-on...

#94 Post by GregD-UK » Wed May 18, 2011 9:37 pm

Hi all,

OK, the add-on pipe configuration for the mille setup, what diameter pipe should be used? My exhaust guy, wants to know why the need for extra pipe as it goes into one anyways :smt017

I told him my limited information, was to balance the pipes more, and to give more low-med power on the delivery. Correct me please. Working on a "shot-gun" setup :smt003
My warranty is the clear/smoked tail lights around the corner!!

One of the threads I had bookmarked mentioned the tube sizes - that was before I had a bit of bother with the PC and lost all my Firefox bookmarks ....

search enough and the thread will turn up again - I think it was from AF1

I think the theory is that the balance pipe improves the scavenge.
The added pipe at the front has the biggest effect and primarily improves mid-range. The shorter rear link is more of a top end tweak.

That was certainly one of them.

I also had a useful email from Pete when we were both investigating and discussing this:
few things i have found in the thread of note:

"Spoke to Mark Hill at MHP yesterday about the modified manifold I bought from him on ebay and asked him for some backround info on the subject. He has lots of info on tuning these bikes and about this mod.

He told me that the longer crossover pipe was to help with the returning exhaust pulses/waves and that it helped with the midrange dip around 5000rpm and made the bike pull more harder in the low/mid rev range. He explained that the rear header on these bikes is far to short and that the smaller crossover pipe into the collector helped to equalize it (rear header)with the front header and improve the flow of the whole exhaust system. I asked him would spending £1400 on an Akra 2-2 against this mod be more beneficial and he replyed "No Way". Himself and a few others worked on this mod from the beginning and he said that they where amazed at the performance gains it gave compared to standard and also how much it matched a full race system. It was made to offer a cheaper alternative to the guys who where racing Mille's at the time against buying a full Akra system. The only thing to note is that they where using a 70mm link pipe and 70mm end can which was being supplied through Aprilia at the time. He said this gave the system it's best performance. I told him I expected to use a 60mm link pipe and can and he replied that you would lose a few HP off the top end but that it would be a good compromise.

The two bent bits each end of the long crossover pipe are 70mm each and the straight middle section is 55mm.
195mm for the total length.

Diameter is 35mm.

That's the bit I'm talking about. The full length of that crossover (elbow to elbow) is 195mm and 35mm diameter. Straight piece on it's own is 55mm long."

..... and if you ever do, please find out what his various chip designations mean .... +10, +2, -2 or whatever.

This has been discussed several times on the forums and although several plausible theories have been postulated, we don't have a definitive answer.
