I concur. Wholeheartedly. In the short while I had the standard shock fitted I was determined to get the seats fitted with gel pads. Any ride over 50 miles was quite literally a PITA. I got the Ohlins with the correct (for me) spring rate, and we did a tour of France in 2010 without any bother. It's still on the standard seats, front and back.
FWIW, if you run standard Falco triangles/dogbones as I do, a spring rate of 700lbs/in works well for me. Nice and taut solo, plush but controlled two-up.

Mine was like a pogo stick - not rock solid but no useful damping

I think they're piss poor all round. If the spring rate doesn't get you the damping disappears. I was so glad to get shot of it. It must have done all of 500 miles before I took it off.

Eating lots of cake is a sure fire method of getting the back shock to move. Mine generally seems to be going in the opposite direction to my arse though.

I think that he is going to make his own Olive or pistachio green one

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

Having spoken to the vendor, he says and i quote;
"i bought an rsv ohlins and put the white spring on that, this shock as the ohlins spring re-powder coated on it"
Is that any good?

Pictures? we can then probably tell from what it looks like.
If it really is an ohlins but the spring has been re-coated, that's fine.
Which year bike did it come from? that will dictate which linkages it was designed to use.

Oh now I understand
1) Don't know whether the spring is the right length
2) Don't know whether the spring has the right rate - and depending which year ohlins it's from, it will have a different spring rates
Sorry - I'm not much help here

well i'll fit it regardless, and if it bounces around like a bouncy castle i'll look for a different spring

I'm intrigued.
With you on the gold bling. My bent tyre valves are gold and very posh they look too.
