Tyres, tyres, everywhere

When I was once a slice of the Grande Fromage I would commute to the City from deepest Darsetshire on an ex-plod ST1100. For the first couple of years it was up there on Tuesday and back home on Thursday, year round. The coldest I saw was -7 one chilly morning, but decent thermals, two piece leathers and a lined one-piece oversuit kept the shivers at bay. I'd leave home at 4am, behind my desk in EC1 by just after 6. My travel time was about a half to a third of what it usually was in the car which made it worth doing.
Then I bought a Saab 9000 CSE 2.3 turbo (the best £2k I've ever spent on a car!) and went a bit soft...

Perspective is a funny thing. The ST would seem like the height of plush riding but I had an old model Hornet 600 last week as a loaner while the Falco was in being serviced (and getting new battery, starter solenoid, speedo sensor etc.).
Getting the Falco back made the commute yesterday seem like a tropical, plush, luxury ride despite it being -5 and including Friday on the M25 and lane closure on the M40!

Or the maxxis equivalent - I bought a cheap set when I was needing tyres urgently - they performed well

I know that Griff was raving about a particular Metzeler tyre, but I can't remember if it was the Roadtec Z6. But I do know that Metz have recently introduced the Roadtec 01, which is supposed to be their top dog in that type of tyre. That probably means that there will be deals on the Z6, if price is important.
On thinking about it, Griff was waxing lyrical about the M7 RR, which is a rather more sports-focussed tyre. Sorry can't be of more help.

I think you should try the new Roadtec 01. I'll be ready for a new pair soon and could do with a Falco-based review!blinkey501 wrote:What are peoples thoughts on metzeler Z6 Roadtec?
I am looking at new tyres for the falco?

Why not stick to the tyre you like?katie1 wrote:I think you should try the new Roadtec 01. I'll be ready for a new pair soon and could do with a Falco-based review!blinkey501 wrote:What are peoples thoughts on metzeler Z6 Roadtec?

I hate it when people ask if you have a bathroom, I want to say "No we pee in the garden"

Well, I might like these more? Working on the 'don't know until I (or you!) try' principle :)Gio wrote:Why not stick to the tyre you like?katie1 wrote:I think you should try the new Roadtec 01. Had a set of them and they lasted quite well. It's been a while, so the details might be a bit foggy...blinkey501 wrote:What are peoples thoughts on metzeler Z6 Roadtec?

Dual compound, so harder in the middle but grippy on the outside edges. Given I did mostly commuting at the time, their longevity was a plus, but being able to handle the wet roads during the Oz winter made riding enjoyable.
Can't recall any slips, slides or brown-trouser moments, so must have been OK.
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.

Both bike and hoops are totally capable, the gixer K5 was spot on,really sweet and forgiving, but a mate of mine managed to drop his 'Anniversary Edition' twelvety umpteen times or more ( despite having sporty rubber )
Cleverly disguised as an adult !
I've been thinking about tyres for a long time now, as the Falco was in desperate need of a new pair of boots.
I'd wanted to go for the T30 Evo's, but in the end I decided it was too much of a risk, as I've always been comfortable on Avon Storm 2 Ultra's, especially in the wet.
So she's just been fitted with a pair of Avon Storm 3d x-m's, which are the upgrade of the previous tyre.
I'll be putting about 200 miles on them over the weekend, so should be nice and scribbed in by next week!

Not that I'm jealous of you scrubbing tyres in on a dry, hot weekend but, why is it always snowing/monsoon/hurricane weather when I put new tyres on?
My parting shot (in the Falco tyre stakes anyway) is that the T30s are very good if you wear these out over the summer and fancy a change :)

I did wait longer than I should have to replace them to be honest. It feels like a new bike now. I rode 80 miles to Coventry on Friday and was very cautious, but on the way back last night, the tryes felt superb, and I was back to my normal riding.katie1 wrote:Not that I'm jealous of you scrubbing tyres in on a dry, hot weekend but, why is it always snowing/monsoon/hurricane weather when I put new tyres on?![]()

I'm hoping these will last me the rest of the year now, but it depends how often I am between Lincoln and Coventry. I'll probably have to grow up soon and buy one of those metal boxes that most people seem to have, for the long, boring journies, and turn the bike into a 'fun' vehicle.
