Engine work has begun.

Cam wheels off and gearbox out.

The gearbox.

Looking to split the cases mid-week.. Usually fun. NOT! :smt100

POW!! Engine is apart. Crank journals not looking too bad, but the shells were looking past it, so may consider a re-grind depending on how they size.

Image

Con-rods have seen better days.. Think I've got a spare set (or two) at me dads, so will see about taking a mooch at the weekend.

Drive side main is good, but looks to have slipped a little on the journal.. Loctite needed there. Timing side main I'll replace cuz it's cheap.

Gearbox gearing is feeling a little 'grindy', so that'll be replaced and most or the needles of the layshaft bearing have fallen out, so there's another replacement.

On a positive note, the inlet cam is a 3134 and in good nic.. Not sure if the exhaust is a match though, got to check. Followers are standard, so I'll replace those with 'R' jobbies.

Looks like it's been apart before. The con-rod bolts were different thread sizes. :smt017

Yes please keep posting Will. From one who's skills extend no further than routine servicing (although I did tinker with the carbs on the old CB550) I am impressed.

Rims, spokes and lacing were done by Black Cat Wheels in Wolverhampton. Really nice bloke and produces a quality Central Wheel can only dream of achieving. Miles cheaper too!

Ooh, they look pretty. I'd be tempted to use them as Christmas decorations.

Oh to have a proper workshop, in the warm & dry; I'm getting really fed up with trying to work on bikes outside in the cold.

i know what you mean mart - some times i struggle to decide which garage to use....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

A little more done.. Wasn't in there for long tonight.

Checking the big-end journals
Image

Slightly under size. The faces are looking and feeling at bit past it, so time for it's first re-grind.
Image

Con-rods. Found a pair of shiny ones (top) in me piles of Triumph spares. The oil stained originals (bottom) will be cleaned up and stuck back in the parts bin.
Image

Should be getting the frame back this week. Have the tyre's on order also. So far I'm still way ahead of the expected finish date. First time for everything I suppose. :smt001

is the Newky Brown being used as an assembly lubricant?
I used to use a wipe of STP or similar on the shells so they,re not spinning dry till the pump catches up.
Nice to see progress :smt023

Interesting point, I did exactly the same with bikes and car engines for years.
Always worked well for me.

Frame and sundries have come back from powder coating.

I fear though that this may be one of the last posts of the year. Being silly season, obtaining spares is going to be troublesome. Not many classic spares shops are open ye see. That said, there is still plenty to do. The wheels are away at the fitters for new boots, so when I pick them up on Monday I can get the bearings in and ready to fit.

Thanks for all the reply's to this little venture of mine. It's encouraging. :smt002

Looking good Will.

Kept the safe option of black then when there are so many colours available with powder coating.
