Sorry to swing back to the re-packing issue.

I need to do my Blueflames soon as they are really loud even with the baffles in... how easy/safe is it to drill/cut the rivets off and re-rivet them? I cant seem to find any info on this.

Hopefully the rivets won't be super hard and just drill with steadily bigger bits untill the head pops off, so you dont damage the sleve. A little won't matter 'coz the new rivet will cover it up.

Buy yourself a pop rivet gun should get them cheap enough, I've got one somewhere. Put new rivet in the hole and squeeze the handles 'till it goes pop and Robert's your mother's brother.

Make sure you get some decent rivets - re-rivetted the baffle on my Honda Bros after the previous owner removed it - they went rusty and looked really awful.

Plenty there. I personally would recommend the mat type on a V Twin. Remember though you'll need a fair bit. Cant remember how much the Renes used to take on average, sorry!

Erm........ do all makes of can have this packing then?

I was under the impression that mine (Beowulf) had none.

If mine don't but some do then why?

Road legal cans tend not to. They use the way the can is built internally to reduce the noise (they also run slightly hotter.. put yer hand on a race can that's been run for 5 mins and a road can that's been run for 5 mins. The road can is hotter 9/10 times.)

Dont know about Beowulfs.

Cheers Kwackerz. Mine are road legal and do get hot so I will continue in the belief that they will need no repacking. I'm fairly sure that I asked the fella when I bought them and was told there was none but my memory is not what it used to be. ..... I imagine

actually andy, seems as if that is the way the law is going - I think you will find that from next year the MOT's are going to get interesting - bs/eu stamped number plates anyone? and I know that suffolk havce had vosa inspectors with them - when i was pulled one went over my bike - stated that my exhaust was legal as he could see the BS mark - and he IGNORED the lack of baffles.... he also revealed that the laptop in the car had an upto date database of legal and illegal cans....

when a neighbour got pulled last week, he got a 30 quid fine for the number plate - and the comment "Nice job on the polishing out of the word "NOT" - be glad your number plate was illegal or i would have done you for that"

and yes, that was suffolk plod - and a bike cop to boot

Also theres old and new wadding. The new high temperature stuff doesnt disintigrate over time whereas the stuff I got a couple of years ago dissapeared into balls the size of peas and blew out. I pay the bloke who made my exhaust a tenner a can for repacking stuff.

I was also told to wrap wire wool round first to take the big hit of pressure away before it got to the wadding.

Strip the cans down,, wire wool round the centre pipe then the wadding round the outside of that

Which raises the question where to buy the wire wool if yours happens to have rusted or blown away..

A point of note. You may already know, may not.

If you have a battery in your toolbox, whatever you do, do NOT put wire wool on your toolbox when the lid is open or in your toolbox. Batteries and wire wool start fires much better than wood or paper and a match.

I use to remove mine for the MOT but the last time I left them on with no bother as the etching has worn away.

Apparently as long as "NOT for road use" is not visible it's legal.
As for plod only time I got stopped by Hampshire constabulary with nothing better to do, the guy um med and arr ed but let it go after a couple of noisy big bore cars went past whilst he was chatting, "perfectly legal on a car" he said frowning.

Sure I read recently that there has been a change and that cans no longer need to be stamped as approved - just "not for road use" if they're not.

It was a two page article in MCN, about an agreed new policy from ACPO.
Assoc. of Chief Police Officers.
The original statement came from the head of ACPO or whatever, stating that they were advising forces not to major on issues like cans and small numberc plates unless they were too noise or unreadable at a certain distance (number plates not cans). They should concentrate on more important issues like dangerous driving etc..
It was followed up a week or so later by a second statement, following numerous letters and emails from bikers who had been nicked recently!
His reply was that it was only suggested policy and not all forces would apply it the same way. Usual clear as mud situation then. One lady (an ex copper) wrote to MCN cos she had bees knicked for have too big a number plate on her recent new ER6! Standard letter size, plate very slightly too big!
Seems some police forces are taking the piss!
Then again what did we expect.

Thats why my Falco still runs with a standard rear plate and BS stamped Beowulf cans with baffles still in, don't want points on my licence for something silly.
