Interesting, its not a Royal Enfield

At 1st thought it could have been an AJS, but ultimately I think its a Rex-Acme, or if prior to 1922 just Rex don't know the model tho.

Shame its so tatty looking.

Not a Royal Enfield,
Not a Rex,
Try around 1926 -1927 for the year,
It's a 60 degree V Twin by the way.

It is a shame indeed, as these are quite rare by all accounts.

If its a Rudge there are a few things wrong with it, namely the running boards, exhaust, tank behind the seat post also the front brakes (early disk type?)
This is the only bike similar I can find and its not that one as its a 1924 model

I still don't know 100% what it is, but its either a BSA or a Raleigh.

I'm inclined to go for the Raleigh with the 798cc 60 degree V-twin.

I found the one I showed you at the Sturmey archer website

As you can see, there is what looks like an early disc brake fitted to the front. that second pic doesnt have one tho'. Interesting!

What I don't get is the flatboard behind the front mudguard, unless its the front brake I can't see any advantage to having it :smt017

I expect the disk was worse than useless as there's no provision for a brake resevoir to operate it hydraulically. ( Cable operated disks are not very good even now)

I'd like one though :smt003

I think you'll find it's a bit like the one Honda fitted to the CB125S in the 1970s.

It's a sort of mudguard - just one at a not-so-conventional angle.

Hmm.. I would expect that it's to protect the front cylinder from spray (SV650 riders take note!) without it extending downwards, to maintain the ground clearance and streamlining, or something like that!!!

Is it?

I'm not so sure after all just look at the size of the thing, its almost surf board size.

Well the one on the Honda is - there's one belonging to my son in the garage.

I'm pretty sure the thing on the Raleigh does the same job.

Looking at my pic, which is clearer, it appears the dynamo is located at the front. This plate like affair would clearly be to add protection from the spray for this bit, whilst not encapsulating it (Dynamo) I assume is purely to stop it overheating... allow air flow over it.

The rudge appears similar in layout of the mechanicals, but I assume better made and doesnt need flappy bits as theyve got a better design for the dynamo..?

Honda 400 with a cut n shut rickman fairing

However you could be forgiven for thinking it to be a KZ440 ! It shares a few similarities in design!
