When they are placed in an order top down or bottom up if you are that way inclined, you could also on some strings put the wrong end into the machine head.

I knew exactly what Gio was getting as he is who he is :smt017

No, they're the right way up - that's the whole point of having left hand and right hand guitars.

Some left-handed people who choose to use Right handed guitars re-string them to put the strings in the usual top to bottom order but if I remember correctly (and I may not!) Hendrix didn't bother.
