The Alfa Dealer in Chesterfield (who also sells Triumph and Harley Bikes).
Have never divulged anything about what was changed with the ealier failures, although under pressure from me the workshop manager did reckon "just the turbo".
This time I forced them to change the oil feed pipes to the turbo, (bought them myself for £100), and I know they were fitted as I got the old ones back as requested.
I am not really a turbo person and can't actually see anything on this car, but the I thought the intercooler just cooled the the induction "charge" before it went inton the combustion chamber, and never thought that would be a problem.
Like in the current situation, the turbo is working very well, with what feels like better performance and economy than at any time in the 5 1/2 years I have had it, but whines and screaches when cold, and just screaches when hot, otherwise for the moment it goes fine.
Obviously it will get worse again.

any metal filings from the blades or bearings can get dumped in to the cooler and can get sucked back into the new turbo and the cooler can get filled with oil as can the cat and exhaust. i'm doing a turbo on a renault traffic now.the cooler as filings in it and is full of oil, the pipes i will clean but the cat is blocked and the exhaust is full of oil.just changing the turbo is very risky. i'd also take the sump off and check the oil pick up.i take it they did an oil an filter change?

Interesting thoughts Ian, something that I certainly was not aware of.
With the last turbo, there was actually very little damage or wear. The only wear that AET found was on the thrust bearings, which was allowing a small degree of end float, but caused lots of loud screeching when it spun up under power.
Autoworld did an oil and filter change and I provided 6 litres of special Turbo Diesel Mobil 1 plus filter, cost me nearly £100, (who said petrol was expensive?).
It went through its MOT 10 days after the new turbo was fitted, and passed the emission test OK, so I would hope the cat would be OK.
