Personally - and I AM speaking from experience - I think that Depression should be renamed so that the 'man in the street' understands it better. Calling it 'depression' makes it sound like being depressed, ie feeling fed up. It's actually called that because parts of the brain are 'depressed' ie not working properly. It's even possible to be suffering from depression without feeling miserable, there are other many and various symptoms like tiredness, becoming clumsy, having trouble with your eyes, it varies from person to person - and they often don't know they are suffering from depression until someone picks up on it. Unfortunatly one of the symptoms is a disinclination to ask for help because you 'know' that no-one can help (which is of course untrue).
And as for suicide - it can be a cry for help and sometimes it's the last resort of the desperate. And sometimes it can be something that seems to 'happen to' a person without their will being involved.
It's really not surprising that those who've haven't been there don't understand and even condemn, it's difficult enough to understand - and to recognise when it happens again - when you HAVE been there.
The selfish bitch
