Stripped flywheel and sprag and all was well.

If you are doing this make sure you have the sprag on the right way round when you refit it. It could be an easy mistake to make.

The upshot was that I had a short in the starter motor. The wee plastic insulator had broken inside causing increased resistance and heating up all the wires.

Anyway after a good bit of coaching yesterday she finally fired and is now back to her window shattering best.

And I am one happy Falco owner again.

Great news .... but if that was the case, what was whirring?

(BTW, technical point, a short reduces electrical resistance)

Nae bloody idea! Honest!
Sounded like the cogs inside the casing were just whizzing round and not catching the starter :smt017

Anyway it gave me chance to get in there and check the sprag and the flywheel nuts for tightness.
