what i meant, snappy, is that if you watch a video at youtube or a similar site, such as this vid...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCAgUkMaHb8

then you can save it to file so you can play it later, when youre not on the internet, or turn your pooter into a karioke machine for when the grandkids come round..

you use an add-on for firefox called keeptube (found on a search on firefox's site) to save the video (in FLV format.. a flash player file) to your hard drive. it basically adds some extra coding to firefox to enable this to happen..

and then replay it like anything else, using VLC player. Windows media wont work cos its shit and doesnt have the right codecs (codes), so use VLC, readily available on the net, as it has the right codecs to replay the file correctly

:smt005 Could be a number of things!

1. MS's last update
2. A need to defrag and clean up the pooter
3. More things running in the startup menu
4. A need to reboot the computer to finalise changes
5. If youre on about the web, clear the history and cookies
6. Running out of free drive space (hard drive)
7. Antivirus causing problems (AVs tends to integrate with browsers) maybe it's having a field day taking up more space and being allowed to do more.. dunno which AV youre using..

Could be a number of things

:smt012

I have IE8, Firefox, Opera and Chrome all installed on this pooter with no ills.
I dont use them all at once but I do use them all now and again. Firefox is my main weapon of choice and mine has the fasterfox plugin, the keeptube plugin and the manual changes made as described earlier.

Definately a quicker browsing experience and so far ive found no ills with using the slightly modded firefox.

Ive also done the obligatory websearch and changed a couple of other settings using the following:
Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

just thought i'd pass it on :smt001
Worked a treat. Great tip, Thanks M8

I'm no computer expert and as such this may not be linked with this thread but..............

My Google maps had now stopped working and despite following Google's tips it still won't work. The map loads but nothing will work, zoom, address's ect..

Is there any chance that this tip has caused a problem???

I haven't changed any other setting (don't know how to) and I did print off the instructions above to make sure I followed them exactly

Any suggestions from all you IT experts? :smt003 :smt003

Mine works fine, fully functional :smt017

Have you tried it using Internet Explorer?

If you can tie it down to Firefox,It could be something as simple as a plug in not enabled on firefox, as ive had this with other stuff (the keep tube didnt work til i downloaded a plugin for it.. to do with Java, i believe)

Wierd, Google Maps works fine in IE :smt017

For the time being I've switched back to using IE (at least my Norton 360 password system works on IE) till I can figure out what the issue is (not very likely) as I use Google maps a lot. As I didn't change any other settings and I've been using Firefox for over 2 years I wonder what changed to cause the problem?

On a side note IE has definately improved but still not as quick as Firefox
