ohlins rear shock

1) Stick with the Ohlins - it's a good bit of kit. Even if it does need servicing it will work out cheaper than a new Penske unit.
2) Just get your standard forks set up well for you - the standard Showa and Marzocchi units are good kit. I've fitted Ohlins forks from a MilleR and I think it is better but it's not so far better that it is an important mod. If I had a second Falco it wouldn't make my list of priority mods.

I'd reiterate what Andy (D-Rider) says - the Ohlins shock is a top piece of kit and is (IMHO) at least as good as a Penske. I've seen inside Ohlins shocks and forks and the quality of engineering and manufacture is top-notch.
Also the shock fits perfectly in the Falco with no physical changes required (other than the RSV linkages/dogbone). It's a drop-in modification, and in terms of riding enjoyment is one of the best upgrades you can make.
TBH I'd just concentrate on the shock at the moment and leave the forks till later. No point in confusing yourself unnecessarily. Change one thing at a time and focus on that; that way you can be sure of what has changed and the difference (good or bad) that it's made.

Just thought i'd show you guys a reply i had from reactive suspension about this rear shock subject ...................before anything though i have taken all your advise onboard and my Ohlins is now having a new spring fitted and a full service before i then fit it to my Falco using a rsvr 2003 linkage .........please please please don't ever talk about this subject again LOL LOL LOL
........AND FOR GODS SAKE DON'T TELL ME I'M WRONG AS I'VE DONE IT !!!
Starting the mod tart up this coming week and plan on getting the lot done hopefully within the week ........REAR SHOCK / EVO AIRBOX / Dr Rossi's CHIP / MOTO GP END CANS .... (HOPEFULLY VERY LOUD AS WELL ) .............and some other stuff that i've managed to sneak past the good women at home ....
Anyway have a read of this and see what you think ? ;_

I speed read the link, and I'm sorry to say it's the usual internet load of old tosh, you have two options to make the shock you have work, you either need to fit the Mille linkage or have the shock re-sprung and re-valved to the Falco spec, the linkage ratio on that years Falco and that years Mille were completely different, spring length, colour or anything is of no consequence, it's the motion ratio of the link and the corresponding spring and damping rates that matter.
The cost to service the shock and build it up to Mille spec would be £285.
NOW WHAT DOES ALL THAT MEAN TO A SMALL MINDED NONE MECHANICAL MAN LIKE ME ..........I ASK YOU !!!!

the falco never had an ohlins shock - so it is going to be very different than the standard sachs one....

lads lads lads ........calm down ........knew it would pull some strings with you guys but i never thought you lot would hang him !!! LOL ...... It is pretty much what you guys have been saying hence the reason for my rear shock going else where as i'd already made my mind up listening to you lot before i even had the reply from Reactive ..............some lovely man in Yorkshire has it as we speak ......
As i've already said thanks to everyone on here for all your advice on the subject .....i think it now goes to say that anything you need to know about a Falco you come to here and ask the experts !!!

I am happy with my Showa forks - but I have had them serviced and the darren at mc technics set everything up for me
I would find it hard to justify online beyond boing value... But others can and do justify them!
And did not mean to hang him! As you said the falco resources here and at af1 are excellent - I am still learning!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
Front end - Marzocchis and Showas are both good (well, I hear the Showas are ... not actually ridden a bike with them fitted) - just get them set up right.
