Oberon Clutch Slave Cylinder

#16 Post by aspguitars » Wed Sep 02, 2009 3:49 pm

Hi! all, the continuing saga of the clutch cylinder!
I changed it for a nice shiny Oberon one and then spent about two days trying to bleed it by every method possible. I eventually managed to get enough air out of it to ride it, but it really wasn't any better.
I spoke to the guys at Oberon, and they were brilliant. They now have my bike and are doing some serious remodification.
As they said, it's really hard to try to make something for a specific bike if they can't actually fit one. So hopefully by the time I get it back, it should be fine.
Will hopefully get some freebies as well for my trouble.
Will again keep you posted, but for those of you thinking about buying one, I would hold off for now until they perfect them.
As I say they work fairly well as a good replacement for the Aprilia one, but you won't notice any marked difference in the clutch operation.

Hmm - they quote on their site

Oberon clutch slave cylinder has been designed to improve the performance and the looks of the original Aprilia cylinder. Substantially reducing the heaviness of the original clutch action,

Seems a bit cheeky as they now say they've never fitted one to a Falco before :smt017

Oberon Clutch Slave Cylinder

#19 Post by aspguitars » Fri Sep 18, 2009 10:05 am

Just to add to my last entry about the clutch. I changed my clutch slave cylinder for a nice new Oberon replacement. Unfortunately it didn't really make any difference. I contacted Oberon, as I live near them and arranged to leave my bike with them for two weeks to enable them to do some research on the clutch cylinder and some other parts.
I now have the bike back, and the clutch is definately a bit lighter. This is a much cheaper option to the MPL version, and you do not need to alter the sprocket cover.
I am really happy with the guys at Oberon and would definately use them again.

Hi

I've just been looking at the Oberon after having a problem with my clutch fluid and if i decide to keep the bike (which is doubtful) then this appears to be a good option.

You say you had to leave your bike with Oberon so they could research the fit to the Falco.
Have they now sorted this out or am I going to have the same problem that you did when you first bought it?

If you're not keeping the bike, a £2 seal is a lot less than a replacement cylinder. Changing the seal would not be an awful lot more effort than replacing the slave - you have to take the slave off, replace it and bleed the system either way. While the old one is off, clean it and pop in a new seal.

If you are keeping it then a replacement slave can make sense ... if you're not sure it's a significant expense.

Well I've just ordered the seal from your sticky in the technical area.

I have just been told by a garage over the phone who hasn't seen the bike thatthe slave cylinder will need replacing. They aren't rip off merchants as I've used them before but maybe they are just uneduacted about the Falco.

I will take it to my local bike guys and I have ordered the seals to be sent to them.

I will tell them that D-Rider says that the slave cylinder does not need replacing, just the seal and I'll see what they say.

They do have a very large Mastiff dog 'who likes a nibble' so I think I can guess the outcome of that conversation..........

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I replaced the seal when mine started dripping from the slave. Admittedly, it was an Aprilia seal at circa £12 but it cured the problem as D-Rider said. I inspected the cylinder and the bore was fine; no scoring at all. As expected, the new fluid turned black after a a short time.

Looks as though Speedaway are selling the Oberon slaves on ebay

I've posted this up as it's on a Buy It Now - so nobody should be quietly stalking, poised for a stealthy snipe.
