F**K me! They could take off from ascension?
I seem to recall the take off being pretty hairy to get off the strip in time in a DC10, let alone a bombed up vulcan or refueller!
Gotta luv the Vulcan though. Proper stick two fingers up at global warming and lets bomb anything that moves. Bet Biggles and Algy were turning in their graves with jealousy.
(And yes I know Biggles is a fictional character....)

The wideawake runway is huge, septic tanks were flying C5`s in once a week full of new york strip and diet coke, and several starlifters a week to keep the "flaming Hotash grill" in the "Volcano Club" well stocked, god it was tough.......but somebody...

Prolly didnt need as much fuel as pongoes and stabs are so full of hot air, it couldave taken off near vertically. I`m glad we got you to Stanley though safe and sound, is it still only two beers a day?Kwackerz wrote:Crab Air mustve been saving fuel then when we took off...!

Mount Pleasant? F-ck all Pleasent there, I spose its all relative, given the rest of the place, back in `84 it was all dodging the penguin sh-t and taking the piss out the Bennies(islanders) cos they looked like Benny off crossroads, C.O didnt like that, thought it demeaning, so we called em "Stills" ie still Bennies. two can rule was enforced by the SWO (RSM) so we all lost a lot of weight and came home rich, spent mine on a new Laverda RGS.Kwackerz wrote:Touche!
Was last time I went down there however MPA (Mount Pleasant Airport) is a veritable goldmine of different Bars and Alehouses... Engr Bar, RLC Bar, Herc Flight Bar....
When have we, the military, ever stuck to the 2 can rule?
In fact During the actual conflict when I was on Ascension, there was no problem with how much you drank, In fact the coke was more expensive that the Bacardi I was drinking back then, what a tart eh? but the yank beers are just disco piss.
23(F) sqn ended up there, I think one stubbed itself out on a mountainside. Meanwhile we got a load of these from the USN to replace 23, the new lot were called 74(F) Tiger sqn, heres one just out of hiding in the HAS, I think it was painted up for the last Familys day at Wattisham, but Ive pickled a few brain cells since then so I might be wrong.

the other sqn 56(F) "Firebirds" stayed at Wattisham and flew these.

The last Vulcan came home to South Yorkshire today.
It now has a new home at Doncaster/Sheffield Airport, Vulcans were based at the old Finningley airport when in service.
Might get more chance to go and see it now.

Would that be the "last" one ignoring the one at the Midland Air Museum in Coventry?HowardQ wrote:The last Vulcan came home to South Yorkshire today.
Ah well, if you don't manage it, you can always come and see the one in Coventry .....HowardQ wrote: Might get more chance to go and see it now.

I've never forgotten seeing them fly over our garden in Worcestershire way back when - no idea where from/to, but in those days all kids recognised every plane that flew over! But we never called it a 'Vulcan', it was always referred to as a 'V-bomber'.
Nice pic too Howard!
The ride is the reason ........ the destination is just the excuse.
