Gearing

#16 Post by GregD-UK » Tue Sep 08, 2009 4:52 pm

Hi all,

OK, just looked at the gearing commander website. According to the info I put in 16T + 41T can give 161.5mph 16T + 43T can give 144.7mph.
I have at present 15T + 42T on giving 154mph.

But, I have a big clutch slip on my baby :smt017 New oil, new clutch plates 10,000miles ago. Must admit, I was out and 3 or 4 times I went to change up and gear didn't go in and sliped back! Might have damaged clutch plates.....

But, which gearing is best for overall performance, don't want 170mph, like grunt down under 130mph. And quick acceleration pleasz :smt003 All you experienced medlers, can I attain some advice Obi One Kanoobi's...

Cheers,
My warranty is the clear/smoked tail lights around the corner!!

I've heard that shorter gearing (such as 15:41) gives better acceleration (as you'd expect) but in "the real world" has very little impact on top speed as the standard gearing doesn't allow the engine to rev-out fully.

..... and who cares what the absolute top end is - it's just an academic point for 95% of the people and for the remainder is of little relevance 99% of the time.
Real-world performance is about mid-range and handling ...... IMHO

Some Futura owners who've dropped a tooth on the front report that it reduces the engine-braking effect. Have any of you who've done this mod noticed this result?
