Van der Graaf Generator, I had an LP of theirs, can't remember which one though as it was years ago. They did the music for the Friday Rock Show (Radio One with Tommy Vance) if I remember rightly.

..... and now returned.

OK - so we lost - showed them too much respect. They out-dived us too.

.... and I remember Van der Graaf Generator too

I remember VdGG - excellent name, I thought. At work yesterday the conversation (somehow) got round to Focus - the 70s Dutch band, with Jan Akkerman and Thijs van der Leer (you see, there is link, albeit tenuous). Anyone remember them? I saw them live in Birmingham in 1973 and they were amazing. I'm sure Jan Akkerman had bionic fingers...

Yeah I remember them - they had the two singles Sylvia and Hocus Pocus in the charts at the same time .... and that was about it as far as singles were concerned.
Seem to remember a couple of albums too - In and out of Focus and Moving Waves.

Music of the early / mid '70s :smt003

Yep - got them on my Ipod too. How about that well-known Yorkshire combo Back Door (with Colin Hodgkinson on bass, playing like a lead guitar), I have 2 of their albums, or even Skid Row (the irish version with 17 year old Gary Moore making his debut). 2 albums of theirs as well! Beat That!!!

I saw Gary Moore a few times (didn't he join Thin Lizzy at one point?) and was in awe of his guitar playing, but not his attitude. One guy from the early/mid 70s I've been replaying recently is Frankie Miller.

What a voice; the spiritual heir of Otis Redding IMHO.

Gary Moore was indeed with "Tin Lizzie". Phil Lynott bought me a pint of Guinness once. What a great man he was. And he coud play bass! By the way Graham, being as this thread is "yours", we could keep this going for ever....
Frankie Miller - never heard of him, but I'll give him a quikie Wiki and see what pops up.

Any more 70's musical obscurity guys??

I have Hamburger Concerto on LP by Focus. Never really liked Gary Moore's playing. Ozzy's view on him made me laugh: "He's a nasty man, he's got a face like a welder's bench... but that doesn't mean I'd wipe my arse on his curtains..." :smt005

Do any of you guys remember Wishbone Ash? I particularly enjoy listening to the album, Argus which most people would probably agree is their best.Saw them live in Edinburgh in the mid '70s.

Yeah Wishbone Ash were another of my favourites - Argus is an excellent album.

Tangerine Dream anyone?

Blodwyn Pig's "Ahead rings Out" was a classic. How about Edgar Broughton's "Aphrodite - in your see-through nightie".
Anyone see Stray live? Explosions on stage all night. Great stuff.

Yes, Blodwyn Pig and the Edgar Broughton Band (to name 2 or 3 bands depending on how you read it).

What a trip down memory lane this is becoming !

A bit later than these bands, was anyone else into Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, Gong and the Here & Now Band ?
