So how long was it in the end Howard? And did you go with 15/41 ?

I have to buy one soon and need to know.

Easy answer is yes I went with the 15/41, as for the length, eh :smt017
It was too months ago and I am an old fart!
Pretty sure it was 106, trouble is I bought a full length chain at 120, fitted the sprockets, ran the chain through full, pulled it tight and offered it up to the other end slightly overlaid, maked it then chopped it.
Then rivetted it and pretty sure I binned the off cut. I remember thinking do I leave it at 106 and wind the adjusters out half way or will it fit at 105 with it one tooth down on the front?
Seriously borderlie I reckon.
Will go out and have a look!
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...........
The adjusters are 12mm out after fitting two months ago and one minor adjustment two weeks later, so must have been at 106 I reckon.

Thanks Howard. I have been looking at sets on B and C site but can't decide whether to go for individual items so as to get exactly the sprocket sizes I want or a so called race set which has a 15 front but a 42 rear. That would be even lower than the 15/41 I have now. Decisions....

Nobody I talked to seemed to be interested on sets with different gearing. Only did the standard sets.
I ended buying gold anodised Talon sprockets (bling or over top!?).
Steel front ,alloy rear, bought on internet, quality looks good.
Then found I could get the chain full 120 length much cheaper than a custom length from my local bike shop. They would have cut it to length anyway FOC, but I wasn't sure how it would turn out with a smaller front sprocket, so did it myself.
Can check on exactly where I got them from and what they cost when I get home tonight if you are interested Paul.
Just let me know.

I got them from the Motpike eBay shop, but they do not seem to be currently advertising the 15T front or the 41 rear on eBay.
Have been checking other suppliers for Talon sprockets and no luck. Finally went to the Motopike site direct and came up with these.

Front sprocket - http://www.motopike.com/catalogue/chain ... 60-engines

Rear sprocket - http://www.motopike.com/catalogue/chain ... alco-tuono

I initially struggled when trying to buy on line, before I found Motopike.
Prices don't seem bad.
Your local bike small shop can usually get one off sprockets in different sizes as well, if you have a decent one it would be worth a try.
If you don't fancy these, you could also try Renthal stockists.

Motopike also do them -

http://www.motopike.com/catalogue/chain ... t-15-tooth

Hope this helps Paul, although buying this way is always going to be quite a bit more expensive than a standard kit.
Like most other people on here, I think this gearing swap is well worth the cost.

The Talon seem good quality to me and are cheaper than Renthal, but have only had them on for a couple of months so cannot comment on the long term situation. For me tha Talon looks best with a Gold Chain.
Not sure if anybody else has any thoughts about suppliers or sprockets?

Thanks for all your input Howard.

Of course in the end I ignored it :smt017 and went for Renthal sprox (15/41) and a gold Tsubaki chain 106 links from B and C. I was happy enough with the Talon or Renthal sprox from Motopike but haven't heard of RC chains so wanted to go for Tsubaki (which they don't offer)

Anyway I'll let you know how this set works out.

im having my chain and prockets changed on thursday, was going for a 16/43 setup but the workshop could not get that until late july, so i had to settle with stock setting. My question is: with your experience, is it possible to put on either 15 or 43 afterwards without too much work.

It's easy to replace the 16 front with a 15 later on as the chain stays the same length. It would be easy enough I guess to replace the rear sprocket too BUT if you go larger it may require a longer chain and that would be a problem on a part worn chain ( or even a new one)

As Fausto says, but with one tooth less it means the adjusters don't start at the "adjusters fully in" point, it will start 10 or 11mm out. As the chain beds in and starts to wear it will eventually reach the maximum adjustment sooner, (even though the chain may not be fully worn out). Therefore if you have run with the standard gearing and things have stretched a bit, it may be possible by this time to take a full link out and join again with a new soft link.
When I first changed my gearing a few years ago I couldn't get a 15 tooth front or a 43 or 44 tooth rear, could only get a standard Mille 42 back.
One tooth up on the back makes roughly 1/3 of the difference of going one down on the front, but it was my only option. The local Aprilia dealer fitted this but had to use a longer Mille chain, so I just took a link out sometime later.
The best setting for the chain is probably 1 down on the front and 1 up on the back, 15/41. The chain would then be standard length again, but this is probably a bit too low for most people.

This has not been my experience.

Although I can't comment on brand new set ups (yet) I am nowhere near the back (or end) of the adjuster range on my chain. I have a 15 front and what I believe to be a standard chain length which, whilst it may have more life in it, is getting tired at 18k miles ( I believe).

Of course I'll save any absolute judgement on this until I have fitted the new stuff which has already run into problems as B and C don't have the rear in stock ! Looks like both shops will be getting some trade.

Sorry to be picky Howard but do you mean 15/42 here ?

As it happens that's what I will end up with due to B and C not having a 41.
