I have a program called Registry Mechanic from PC tools, as Krackers says it will almost always find something to fix. I have to say I don't get as many problems with software as I used to but I am no expert here.

I do have an issue with start up some times Ad-Ware often fails to load properly but will manually load when the machine has finished booting up, My PC never seem to go for long without some kind of snag falcomunky but then it is a Time machine. :smt012
I've got to believe many problems are caused by my virus software I strongly suspect Norton sometimes.

I hate Norton.
It used to be a great, unobtrusive and easily configurable bit o sware. Now its far too bloated, corporate and 'comprehensive' for my liking, (to be expected I spose due to its success). :smt013
Uses a shedload of processor power as well compared to other antivirus sware like Kasperski or AVG.
All I am using at the mo is AVG free!
Combined with Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Blaster...

I wanted to get others opinions on Norton, I will stick with Norton until they want more money then I will dump it. Trouble is will I need to take everything down and do a clean install or would it be OK to just uninstall Norton? I know from past experience software uninstalls seem to bring on gremlins.

tbh - back up everything you want to keep - then reformat and reinstall

norton is a bag of shite to get off your system, so just kill it

Indeed.
Personally, after an uninstall of anything as big and complex as Norton, (Photoshop CS2 springs to mind, games excluded), I would do a format and install a new OS.
Especially if what youve uninstalled has caused problems...

Got to agree with all that's been said about Norton, and it seems a webwide opinion ....
