What? Sorry Gio, but perhaps you shouldn't have assumed then.

Yes, I understand entirely why the farmers shoot the dogs when they get on their land. Farming is tough enough without losing 20 or 30 lambs to a stray dog.

And I'm going to irritate the lot of you now............

Dog escapes, once fair enough
Twice ok
I may even stretch to 3 times but after that it is NEARLY always the owners fault IMHO. Whether for getting a dog that is outwith their control, or for not training it properly or not understanding what was involved in keeping that particular breed. I'd love a husky but they are outwith my capabilities for dealing with..... answer, don't get one. Our dog homes are full of gorgeous stray dogs and there are numerous pedigree rescues around the country because of peoples selfish attitudes re. animals.

I agree with Myrkk and with Ligloo - don't have a dog if you can't deal with it, and if you have one that isn't safe for whatever reason, put it down. My sister had a dog that she was worried might bite someone - I told her she should put it down and she did - but only after it bit the thumb right off the little girl next door.

We had a beloved family dog put down years ago because in his old age he became funny tempered and we wouldn't take the risk.

When we adopted a dog from a rescue centre we were told not to choose certain dogs as they were permanent residents not suitable for rehoming - I don't agree with that either, it's not fair to the dogs to live permanently in kennels.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

I had a Husky - it was a dog - I think it's been put down.

And back to the point .... yes, it is in many dogs' nature to escape and to kill it's "prey" but, however difficult, it's the owner's responsibility to keep it under control. If they can't do so then they shouldn't own them.
Shame they took the licensing requirement away - it said something about the seriousness of the responsibility that comes with ownership.

Sorry to hear about the chooks Myrkk :smt012

Owners at fault - shame for the dogs really

Our current adoptee recently met grandbaby, (obviously not left alone with) she was brilliant - Penny hadn't met a dog before and was very excited and confused
they were happily sharing cuddly toys (mine!!) by day two

I would have!

We're on the hunt for a wee dog now - was supposed to happen while I was off work for the past couple of months so it had time to settle in but I'm back to work part time and still waiting grrrrrrr.

Getting back to the thread though - it's 100% the owners fault and I can't believe the lack of reaction Myrkk got from both the police and the RSPCA when all she was trying to do was protect her property and ensure the welfare of the dogs - I think Sam had a point with the speeding charge getting a reaction! :)
