My mate has a farm and runs an oil fired Esse range cooker/boiler, it runs continuously and is quite economical compared to the old oil fired boiler he had ... he's a tight git and wouldn't spend any more than he had to!!
But it does all the lot cooks heats provides hot water ..I think one of these ie:Aga / Rayburn / Esse would be very reliable.
I have a gas boiler for heating and water but use a woodburner in the main room on an evening for a cosy night ..I dont see the point of heating the whole house when I'm only in one room, and the wood is free!! ...I work at a upvc manufacturers where regular customers bring their old doors/windows back to chuck away in our skip ...lots of nice hardwood, so I rescue it from there, cut it up, and burn it ..toastie warm for nothing and it's green

...plus I can cook casseroles and stews on the top of it yum!
the more money I can save, I can spend it on my bikes

You will need to fit a pre heater in the oil line to do that, same as running them on red diesel.
Yep I'd forgotten that ( but then I wasn't 21 until 1975)

Med ipt(ex MSA ex dmed) been joined to GS and moved to Avon and we erks get to be ERS(will hear end of this week we're told) or drown in the redeployment pool, (can't afford to move - cant afford to travel that far) hundreds of years experience amongst the staff - straight down the drain
news about deaths due to lack of med stores I really dont want to have to see

'Tis the tank in their front garden (next to my fence) that stinks

Snappy, Sorry to hear about it. Fingers crossed for you (and us lot at the pointier end) It really achieves nothing in the long run, we're suffering the output problems of other IPTs who've relocated, rehashed, etc. It's complete dogtoffee and wont get any better. It wasnt broke n didnt need fixing!!
While im on a roll with derailing, How is your fence out the back BTW? started falling down yet?

I always found that the secret with oil was to have a tank big enough to contain a years supply, and then to fill it up in July. That way you get chance to run a Dutch auction with the local oil suppliers when times are slack, and oil prices are pretty seasonable. In addition I would install a multi fuel / woodburner stove. They really do pump out heat and there's lots of free or very cheap fuel in rural areas
LPG is more resticted in availability so you have almost no room for haggling.

*rerails*
Laz's last post probably has hit the nail squarely on the head. Playing the market in the off season and utilising the resources around you has to be the way forward I wouldve thought

We are pretty rural and have installed Shell Gass central heating and a wood burner.
It is a definite plus not having just the one system. Ran out of gass while waiting for a delivery one Christmass and we here hosting all the familly. The wood burner made it bearable, even cosy. Not when you get up in the morning though.
As it was 15 years ago when we thought it the best option, I can't say how the gass compares price wise these days. The gass boiler has been pretty reliable and I realy like the wood burner which we tend to use for primary heating in the evenings with the gass central heating, turned down pretty low most of the time.
The wood burner does take a lot of wood though but we have a spinney next to us. I have built a couple of wood sheds and bought a chain saw. Still a lot of work though, but it is outside work which makes a change from sitting at a desk.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

Here here nibs! ....nothing better than a good workout on a sunday morning with your chainsaw and axe
and I'ts a good feeling when you have chopped the logs and are sat toasting yourself in front of a wood stove

cant beat it.
my niece and nephew sit in front like two cats ...they have been brought up with storage heaters and gas central heating, to them it's from "the olden days" ...just like me ha ha
