Mine came from Orrell as well and is OK if the reflector short cut is correct.
Is your bike stamped as UK Firestarter ?

My Mechanic friend says they tape up Euro spec lights for the MOT then rip it off when finished.

Yeah - the MOT guide allows this to pass an MOT but this is not acceptable for the bike to be registered in the first place. Therefore, it's not "fit for purpose" therefore they have to sort it out for you (unless they made it clear to you that it was being sold to you with the wrong headlight).

Might have to take a ride up there and get it sorted.
Any chance you could PM me the details about this? - especially what the label under your seat says about year of manufacture and which market it's for.

(my betting it is an '03 model for the EU market)

Quick update:

Phoned my dealer yesterday.
"Yes Sir, the person who will deal with that is not able to speak to you now, give us your name and number and we'll get back to you"

5pm came No call.
They close at 5:30 so tried ringing them a few times ... answerphone .... didn't bother to leave a message as they're usually a waste of time.
Impression gained - "they're going to give me the run-around on this"

This morning came.

My mobile rang .... it was the dealer! :smt003

Explained problem again.

"OK sir, we'll have to order a new one for you, leave it with us and we'll get back to you as soon as we've got it and can arrange for you to pop down so that we can fit it."

Now unless they try to charge me for it, I'm really happy.

Dealer is a bit far away so I may see if they'll post the light up so I can fit it myself (and try to keep the other for European trips - being as I'm saving the trouble of fitting it)
Failing that, I'll have to drop it off and pick it up later so I'll see whether they can lend me a demo Shiver or a 1098 or something nice while they fix it.

Well .... as I've been riding with the wrong one for nearly two and a half years, I might just risk changing it in Coventry and riding on down to the coast. There again, I've not managed to take it outside Britain yet so it's probably not a great priority (and I'd probably not bother with the hassle of changing it over anyway) .... OK it was a stupid idea!
:smt073

..... no point in getting it posted at the moment anyway :smt002 .....

Not been up to to date with progress on this thread. Mine came new from KJM Superbikes near Preston. I bought it as an official uk bike (also advertised as such) and the frame sticker indicates uk bike. I'll check the headlight tonight.

My cousin has his own MOT station so I'll have him check it out too and get the official MOT tets station view from him.

I have checked it against the garage wall and mine dips flat, certainly no kick to the left but no kick to the right either.

Just been out to check. Frame sticker confirms UK market and the reflector pattern is as DR describes for UK.

Also checked the beam pattern from the regulation distance and the beam is flat - no kick to left or right.

I have had a problem in the past with a parallel GSXR and my son's first CG125 - both had a definite kick up to the right and had to be modified for the MOT. In the case of the GSXR I bought it new and asked at the time if the headlight was ok - they subsequently changed it and only charged an hours labour.

DR - thanks for all your effort on this. I think it has helped a lot of people even of it has put some doubt in the minds of some.

Statistics Update

#28 Post by D-Rider » Fri Oct 12, 2007 12:21 am

So far, I've received info from 8 people (including me).

Of those:

3 have UK headlights, 5 have EU headlights

All 3 UK headlights are on bikes with a UK frame sticker
Of the 5 EU headlights, 3 are from bikes with EU stickers - data not supplied for the other 2.

Anyway .... here's the raw data (less anything personal)

The only exception is that if it were sold to us in the clear knowledge that it had the wrong headlight (who was it that had this on their documentation from DK? .... bad news for you - sorry). The dealer may not have done things correctly by the registration authorities but they have been up front with you .... and therefore you don't have an issue with them is how I think it goes.
That was me; that's what I thought; that's why I suggested you all check your (pre-) delivery documents.

...and it was Taz motorcycles, and iirc they only became offical Aprilia dealers in 2004.
