Commit a crime you know will get you time then surely you give up your human rights??
No??
My comment was meant as a (failed) light-hearted response to the post that it followed.
Yes, I agree you forfeit some of your human rights but not all of them.
Certainly you should be expected to work to contribute to the cost of keeping you banged up, your liberty is forfeited and access to most of the niceties and luxuries of the outside should be forfeited. However you should still be treated as a human being and not be mistreated (as you might be under some regimes scattered around the world)

S'alright D I ain't lost me sensa ewmer
I agree though that if you treat humans like animals then they will eventually act like animals so there is a fine line to be trodden in the punishment/rehabilitation of offenders IMO.
Anyway I just want a fire, as long as I can start it. Bring him out.....

if we do put people in prison, it should be a prison, not a holiday flat with TV etc - balls to that
and while incarcerated, make the buggers work there as well - sorting recycling stuff springs to mind as a viable thing
I also think we should name and shame local offenders - big picture, name and crime - in every town centre
and if any namby pamby liberal spouts off about human rights, they waived those rights when they turned to crime
Speeding is a criminal offense, as is using a loud exhaust etc. Do your punishments apply to those crimes? Name and shame the speeders? Wouldnt work, would it because so many id**ts would regard it as a badge of honour, just like an asbo.

I think the reason (or at least part of the reason) that we don't regard these things a real crimes is that they are nothing more than infringements of arbitrary regulations.
The infringements themselves are entirely victimless ... unlike theft & burglary etc which the authorities seem little interested in dealing with.

speeding is not viewed as a crime in the same way as theiving etc - I believe the difference is that it is regarded as a civil offence rather than a criminal one
case in point, causing death by dangerous driving is now a crime, not a civil offence and hence you will go to jail for it. IIRC even if you were caught doing say 150 plus, you would go to prison, not for speeding, but for dangerous/reckless driving which again is a crime, not a civil offence
(Hope I have that right! but some one will know the specifics)
