with a minimal amount of fettling, is now running tomtom 6 :)

(offer price ends on tuesday, but for 100 quid - lovely)
I was looking at that in my local Maplin store but only limited mapping available, so how to convert to Tom Tom software and what is the extra cost to do it? I will buy if the conversion is easy as it looks good and the price is even better :smt003

Tesco have an offer on a Navman atm .. the iCN750 @£160.
Not compared it for price but looks pretty well spec'd.
I use a basic older Navman for work and found it pretty good.

I will post a link to the very detailed forum post for you later m8 - very simple and easy to do, and costs nothing if you have tomtom already

(no one mention torrents!)

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.p ... ic&t=54724

that details it in infinite detail - effectively you end up with a pocket pc with tomtom and other applications running on it

only thing I would say is invest in a 1gb sd card and use that for all the playing around :)

...any advances on this thread? I'm kinda shopping for something to get me through Europe - to Hungary and back - but don't want to break the bank. There are a bunch or car units that cover Yurp for around £100, but all the bike ones are kinda pricey - eg. Tomtom urban rider europe 45 for £220 - but needs on bike charging cradle (£55) and something to mount it to the handlebar. Last trip I did like this I used printed out google maps...

Garmin have a new bike-oriented one out - the Zumo 350LM

It is a bit on the pricey side but it does include free map updates for life which offsets the price somewhat.

Being as the navi unit I made up out of 2 broken ones is constantly unavailable as my son keeps nicking it, I am seriously considering one of these Zumo 350s ...... though I'd have to find somewhere that can do them at a pretty substantial discount ....

I have used a Navman for a few years in the car in the UK and on holiday in the Med and have never had any problems with it, (other than ouit of date maps in Spain, where they keep building new roads!)
Only used it once or twice on the bike in the top clear pocket of a tank bag on a sunny day and could not see a thing, but don't care on the bike as I just go where I go, then just stop and set a route for home if I am not exactly sure where i am.
Was going replace my old one with a new one on special offer, as the UK and western Euro maps I need were silly expensive.
The bloke at Haffords reckons they have gone bust and that's why there are so many good deals on what stock is left.
Pity as it was basic, but well priced and effective.

I've got an Urban rider. Bought it from Handtec who are cheap and have delivered everything I've bought off them quickly. I'd also be looking at the Zumo 220 if I was buying now.

I've got the ram mount that came with it on the kwak 'cause it has old fashioned bars. I've got a Telferizer mount on the Falco which was about 30 quid. This works well but make sure that nut on the top of the steering stem is tight before you start buggering about with it. Don't ask me how I know this. If I had a dbl bubble I'd stick it on the dash.

I use a nokia bluetooth phone ear piece with it and it's audible up to about 80. I've got a quiet hat and quiet pipes. To be honest you only need to listen to the thing at town speeds anyway.

Urban rider bad stuff

Not enough memory and no way to upgrade it. Can't get all of Europe on at once. From memory It'll do Uk to somewhere in Germany.
Need to buy a charging cradle.
And a lead for the cradle...
Bulky
No ear phone socket.
Shows but doesn't speak next road name.
Gloved finger friendly my arse.
Software is a bit crap.
Got charged twice for an update and support were no use at all.

Good Urban rider stuff

Easy to use.
Lane assist is good.
Easy to read.
Waterproof and robust.
Winding roads route option - adjustable with a slider. One end is green laning the other is quickish b-roads.
Where ever I lay my hat.....

I've got the Zumo 400, and I bought a lifetime update for it, one thing that annoyed me is that when your unit gives up the ghost you'd need to buy a fresh licence, however I've heard that the software can be spoofed to any unit that runs garmin software :smt003

Think ive got the Garmin Nuvi 765, it's a car one with bluetooth and ear piece, rigged up an all weather charger using an old 'trickle charger' lead, temp fix with a large bulldog clip and like Andy sit's nicely in the double bubble area, it also plays MP3 files

I've purchased a bluetooth sender which plugs in to the Garmin and a bluetooth receiver which is velcroed and tucked in the helmet lining so makes for wire free system, if not listneing to MP3 files i use my Pure DAB located under the seat cowl again through the portable bluetooth system...nothing perminent so and can all be stored on pocket or seat cowl when bikes parked up

Don't ride in the wet so no issues with Garmin getting wet although i have knocked up a slip on cover from an piece of accetate

Not much use Pete but thought i'd share what i'd done

I also have a garmin zumo 400 - excellent imho

Hanna has the zumo 660 - lot of money but very very good

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
