Glad its running again but surprised it fired at all as the tip switch is supposed to cut voltage to fuel pump.
After saying that I've had mine running with the switch disconnected, which is not supposed to happen

How do you reset this switch if it does trip? I had my tank up and may have moved it, now the bike tries to fire, gives one puff and that's it (giving it gas makes it less likely to start)

It doesn't need a reset - just needs to be orientated the correct way. Once the bike is "upright" again, the switch would be in a correct position and would allow it to start

thanks, I'll check it tonight and make sure it's upright, failing that I'll disconnect it and see if that makes a difference

It was the right way up, still no start. I'll have to check the wiring to see if I damaged anything when on the fuel pump when I had it wedged up.

I'm pretty sure you can normally here the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on, can you lot refresh my memory as I can't hear it priming now.

Based only on my Falco, the fuel pump primes when ignition is switched on then will stop after 2 or 3 secs.

I had a similar problem and to be honest not even sure if it's properly fixed but she's been reliable ever since. After lots of searching I came across the link below. It seems the dry joint in the fuel pump live feed can break down meaning the wiring floats in and out of contact. Lifting the tank can sometimes bring it on. So rather than take it apart I simply removed any free movement by fixing a really tight cable tie.

You should hear the pump prime for about 1 to 2 secs, this is initiated by the ecu,the pump will then not work until demand is made on it.
I had a fuel pump fail on me, worked until it warmed up then cut out.
Every time I removed it to bench test it it worked as I was providing the perfect earth it did not have in with.
Substitute pump may be very handy to have Wayno.
