They may well be a barrier but that barrier works both ways and they can carry charge on the outside.

Unless the charge is too great you will probably get away with it. There is a degree of anti-static protection in the chip inputs.
That said always try never to touch the pins and discharge yourself to ground first.

As a very general rule a lot of that is just precaution as most of the damage is from physical bending etc rather than the charge. Never fried a chip yet and met very few in it that bother with all the static stuff. I guess suck it and see is the answer though IME you would have to be unlucky or electroman to have fried it
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

Early days we used all the anti static stuff when dealing with chips. They were expensive then, over the years got slacker and slacker and never really had a problem. Easy to bend or break a pin if you are clumsy though.

Easier than finding one in a haystack ok ok I know its a needle but ... :)
All we have ever done is touch something metal before the chip

Which is good PROVIDED that the metal thing itself is grounded.

Just been in touch with Gab and ordered a chip - 75 Euro delivered (£64) good value I think.

I only managed about 10 miles on my new gabro chip before the wiring loom gremlins put an end to my fun, but...
That was the fastest smoothest 10 miles.
Bloody shoddy wiring, an almost severed earth on the reg/rectifier, totally fried shut off relay and pump relay, tip over switch giving no resistance reading on test, I dread to think what else may be fried

Just in case you haven't seen my other post.. Fitted my chip today and when I turned on the ignition there's a constant clicking from the fuel pump relay. That worried me so I turned it off and swapped the chips back.

Is it normal and just ding some electronic recalibration stuff, or was I right to turn it off and swap back.

No it is not normal and I think it is the shut off relay rather than pump relay, see my reply to other post.
Yes, good move to swap it back, similar problems when fitting my Gabro

Have you got the chip in the right way round?

Very odd Dave. No pins bent or anything?
