I have noticed over the last couple of years with the older generation looking for these retro machines prices are creeping up. :smt002
Just as a matter of interest, since this is a nostalgia fest and all this talk of old Kwaks - one of our club members has a prize-winning slightly modified Z1000, not sure what year exactly but from way back then. He rarely rides it now as he really is getting on a bit, and would like to sell it but hasn't been able to find anyone prepared to pay a decent price (not sure exactly what that is) so if anyone knows of someone who'd be interested, I can get details. This is NOT a project, it's in perfect order!

The thing is with all the old Japanese bikes now bobbi they are becoming collectable. Thus pushing the prices right up.
I looked at buying a Z1000 seven/eight years ago. They were fetching around 2k.
These bikes now are going for a lot more and if this bike you are talking about is that good it will command a high price.
Not many people at this moment have a lot of money to splash out. :smt018

Having just spent half a day reassembling a Mito Evo.. I have a sneaky little find to inform of...

Pics will follow later, but if anyone is interested in a suffolk barn find Z400 then i can point them in the right direction. I dont think the guy knows what he's got but he's dumped it as a backwaters garage to advertise.. which they havent..

P reg.. OLT 674P
z400
last ridden 1977 then laid up
Carbs shot, gearbox turns over.. gears select..
Engine will need looking at. gentle gentle gentle unsuccessful turning in gear meets with resistance which im taking as moisture getting in thru the knackered carbs -Plugs not taken out yet and no oil dropped in to free it off
fuel tap seized

a 2 minute careful check

things covered in dust, brightwork chrome rusted frame surface rusted
bike complete and paint doesnt look too bad

I have a phone number and name if anyone wants a prod to see how much the bloke will take.. im sure from speaking to the guy he just wants shot of it so.. ton and take it away offer might win.

quick list of bargaining chips:

new carbs
engine rebuild
tyres
battery and electrics replacement
frame shotblast and powercoat..
new plugs and leads.. say coils too

that should do to bring it down to pocket money prices.

http://s1360.photobucket.com/user/Tim_Rayner/library/

Speaking to the guy the lowest he will take (having spoken to the KOC) is 150 quid. If anyone wants his number then PM me and I will pass it on or ask an admin and they can dig it out of the moderator's section where i'll post the details 'out of sight'

OMG that really is a barn find complete with pigeon crap too by the looks of it lol

i ended up buying 2 Z440's on ebay last week to use so i can rebuild mine as you can no longer get the pistons for them.

the plan now is to rebuild mine as original and then use the bits that are left to build a second one as a cafe racer.

then keep what ever is left of the 3rd bike as spares

Aye it's in reasonable nick despite the spider's cobwebs and countless layers of dust

Sorely tempted and I have got first dibs if it doesnt sell..

Missus has stopped me at a ton or it'd be in the van already.. :smt011

There is a funny little man in Bristol that does machine up pistons from blanks, does all kinds of machine shop stuff that no one else seems to know how to do anymore, machining cylinder liners, valve guides ect.

i spoke to him it was going to cost around 600 quid to get 2 pistons made,

i can get pistons from a 1980 gs850 and machine of 20 grams off from the inside which would make them near identical to the original kwack ones, only problem with that is the pin is 16mm on the pistons where the zed is a 15mm so would have to split the engine casings to get the con rods out and have the little end reamed out to 16mm

then i would have to get the barrels bored out by 1.5mm to take the new pistons

have priced it all up can do that for about 150 quid but a lot of work i dont really want to get in to if i dont have to

I would be tempted to look and see if you can buy some little end bearings that would allow for the difference in size.
Just an idea.

dear jim

please can you fix it for me to have the video of a hobbit trying to man - sorry hobbit handle an rsv and a z400 onto the back of his transit....

i think it could be very funny....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
