Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Nah - They do make up some silly rules but I can't believe they could introduce this - it would be nigh on impossible to dream up a justification for it.

Any legislation that is unenforceable quickly falls into disrepute, and I believe that legislation such as that you are describing is unenforceable.

current law about non sorn'd vehicles requiring insurance was an attempt to reduce uninsured drivers on the roads

guess what - people will just sorn and drive any way

bet you all vehicles being insured, sorn'd or not is on the statute books in 3 years and law in 5

and unenforceable? just about every insurance policy is online already, along with every vehicle....

case in point, i just got my photo drivers licence reminder through the post - bet if i do not do it i get a fine through the post inside 3 months..... and no, i am not going to find out by not doing it!

I would never underestimate the insurance industry's way of finding new revenue streams, but I believe that enforced insurance of all vehicles (on or off road) is too big a leap for even the insurance industry to manage. I also think that it would be fairly simple to mount a successful legal challenge to any such legislation.

It's all missing the point, anyway. The scallies, crims and ne'er-do-wells don't even bother registering their vehicles with DVLA, so can't be traced. Pikeys don't bother with SORN. They just use unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured vehicles - completely outside the law.

Well, if that's the case (which I really doubt) then what will be the point of SORN?

.... and with all the ANPR stuff everywhere, will people really drive on SORN with impunity?

They do already Andy - you forget that we can read, write and be civil - any and all of those trouble many

And the point of a SORN - not sure, though I see some companies are already offering SORN specific insurance....

T&c graham - I will ask my broker...

ENTIRELY different

SORN insurance is for damage or theft to your valuable pride and joy while it's not being used. What it doesn't contain is the vital piece of normal bike insurance - cover for damage that you might cause to 3rd parties.
It would not cover you for the basic legal requirement of motor insurance,

Another thing and this is from the DVLA site
The last tax disc on my vehicle expired before 31st January 1998. Do I have to declare SORN?
No. SORN was introduced for vehicles that had tax discs that expired on or after 31st January 1998.
so if your bikes older you can give them the V salute lol

I notice on the tax disc application that vehicles registered before 1st January 1960 no longer need a mot

Yes indeed my 400/4 is not SORNed as it precedes the 1998 cut off date - however the moment I get it to a running state and tax it again, it will then require to be SORNed if I ever decide to take it off the road again

I'm going to look for a pre 01/01/60 bike there's a few about and tbo I think they look alot nicer than the current crop available, (so many ugly bikes about)
