I`m looking on websites as a trip to a large bike shop produced no oil today.
looking for 15w-50 semi-synth, as this seems to be prefered, may have to go for fully synth.
what do you guys use, and has full synth caused any problems?

don't get the fully synth, been known to cause clutch slip

I use 15w 50 motul semi synth and not had any problems

same here ...3 years using Motul 5100 semi ...no prob's yet touch wood

Mine's still under warranty (just) and so it's been dealer serviced so far.
The two service receipts both show fully synth (well, that's what they've charged me for).
I've had no problems.

My understanding is that the clutch slip issues affect the early Falcos more and that the clutch was uprated at some point.
I've also heard that the clutch slip is more prone when changing from semi to fully synth than for bikes that have always run on fully synth.
This is basically what I've picked up from the forums rather than direct experience.

Think I used Plutoline fully synth on my last oil change, as recommended by Maxmoto in Bury St Edmunds, seems ok so far

NO FULL SYNTH....unless to like playing with clutch swaps.

After 20000 miles put in full synth. 50 miles later, bugger, clutch slip. Drop said full synth and put in semi and viola, no slip

use a semi synth oil, not fully synth

I researched it a fair bit for the ducati - that needed fully synth and cost a shed load :( = was therefore pleased that the falco did not need it and was better with semi

I use Castrol Semi Synthetic, Halfords stock it if you have one near you. They also do a cheaper version of their own but never used it on a bike.
Regularly use their own name car oil though with no problems.

My local Priller dealer uses Putoline Syntec. Used it for main service at 10K and clutched slipped slightly on way home from the dealers. Next day was worse but gradually got a bit better, if I was careful with it. Had to try and not use the torque too much and was OK, not much fun on a Falco.
Decided I would need a new clutch but I'd leave it a bit longer and see how it went. Changed to Castrol Semi-Synthetic at 13k miles, never slipped since, now almost 20k and absolutely no problem.
Might be good for the engine, but not for the clutch.

syntec 4 is developed for super bikes, and has an aditive that ensures total compatability with modern clutch friction materials.i've never had a problem with my clutch. i've had it recomended by quite a few machanics.

Cheers guys, phoned my local Aprilia dealer, he has in stock and uses for services 15w50 semi synth.
He has only been a dealer for 9 months so I would assume Aprilia have reccomended this.
seems dear at just short of £30, but at least its local.

I use semi-synth. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that that while modern fully-synth mostly is OK for the clutch, modern semi- is as good as the engine needs, so why pay the extra and take the risk?



(...and I just paid £25 for 4L of some Rock Oil semi stuff).

the recommended oil for my duke is 18 quid a litre......

i am still tempted to keep it and turn it into a track bike..... total madness but, my, what fun :)
