Water in the petrol tank.

Hi Guys,
Hope I'm not wearing out my welcome here.
Yesterday on the way back from Wales Iwas doing about xxxmph in lane 3 of the M42 when all power ceased abruptly. Crikey don't you slow down quickly. Anyway I made to the hard shoulder OK. By the time I had got down to 40 mph it chimed back in with a few misfires. It repeated this twice more on the way home.
To my mind very much like fuel starvation or even water in the fuel. Any body with any similar experiences ?
I think the little drain pipe from inside the filler cap is blocked allowing water to build up and enter the tank when you fill up in wet weather.
Whats the best way to drain the tank ? Will the injectors purge themselves if I clean out the tank. All advice gratefully received.
