MPL Slave Service - DIY

my mpl slave started leaking after about 3000 miles i put up with this till about 6000 miles topping up the fluid every ride till the winter came and salt was put on the roads , and put the bike in hibernation for the winter ,
I emailed MPL and asked for them if they would supply me with a new seal ,and was told to send it back as was not something i could do for myself,( i wondered why )
so i get myself one of these (watch back remover tool )
Image
this fitted nice and unscrewed the back
Image
i cleaned the inside and checked the seal which looked ok , there were black marks where the fluid was passing through the seal which i cleaned and now the inside is smooth the black marks you see here is where the seal is seated and is smooth to the touch
Image
there is a black plastic guide in front of the seal with a notch to let leaking fluid out
Image
this is probably why you cant do it your self as you cant get it back in so i came up with this idea, using a whole cutting saw blade cover the guide seal half way
Image
keep the compression in it and place in the housing and push in with your thumb or any other free finger
Image
job done , but how did the crap get in there in the first place to break the seal , here's what i think as you can see there is another seal which has worn where the clutch rod passes through not giving a good dust seal , i coated this with grease to prevent this
Image
the MPL has now been on the bike for about 2000 miles and sitting rock solid but now I'm looking for the seal code in-case it need replaced .
so you can do it your self , and after all that new clean break fluid i put in it sill turned black but I'm looking into that , I'm sending my old black fluid and an old seal to the break fluid manufacturers to see what the can come up with
hope this helps

Good work Joe! Unfortunately you've introduced me to another tool that I can feel a need for.

A watch back remover tool.

Trouble is, I haven't worn a watch for over 25 years, so I'll have to invent another name for it or else SWMBO will go ballistic.

On second thoughts I won't bother. She'll go ballistic anyway... :smt003

I did a similar fix to mine ages ago and posted it up in the AF1 site. I was luck the people at MPL sent me a seal.
It is possible to get seals made. A shop here measured up the original and the hole it was to fit into and for $100 they would make one. i am sure somebody over there could do the same. But of corse you would get perhaps 20 made and sell em !

I didnt go ahead cos I was feeling poor and they sent me one in the post.

Ahhhrggrrrr

You cant do that !!! Whinging Aussie !! :smt019

Though maybe it's to do with the number of times the letter S appears in Ausie.

TBH I don't care - I've gone for the economy approach.

Ausie or Aussie:
Definition: Inhabitant of land far from civilisation that is filled with deadly creatures that we don't want here. High proportion of criminal ancestry.
Prone to ask "do you know what it is yet?". We don't.

Did anybody ever manage to get the seal number?
My mate Dave looks like he needs one for his Falco, but will probably try Joe's option first.
His Falco has not been used since October, because of winter weather and hic recent operation.
Checked it today, and it was a case of where has the fluid gone?
Where does it actually go anyway, as there does not seem to be any sign of the fluid under the bike?
Could it contaminate the engine oil?
Suppose it could be in the belly pan.
Does anybody have any thoughts?

And finally, does anybody know what MPL charge for a rebuild if you return the unit to them?
