Dropping forks

Hey up,

I'm thinking about dropping the forks throught the yokes a little to speed up the steering a bit. Everything else is set up ok but I'd like a little bit more throw it about ability and dropping the forks is the last thing to adjust.

So then, how do I go about it, is it as simple as loosen the yokes and push em through or what? Never done it before so hints and tips would be helpful! :smt001

Cheers

Do them one at a time :smt003

It is as simple as that. Leave bike on stand, undo all bolts on one fork clamp and clipon, twist it up to the line you want and tighten. then do other side.

Thats about it.

Not done it mesen, but about 5 rings showing seems to be favourite.

Yes it is as simple as that, however ensure you know where the forks were set prior to dropping them thru and carry it out progressively. 5mm at a time (or rings at a time) and most probably 10mm should be the max you need to go to

If you drop em thru too far you'll be into steering damper territory and it'll shake it's head at the slightest chance.

All IMHO :smt002

I need to take wheel off then? Was just gonna loosen em and bang em through. Suppose I need to suspend front end without front paddock stand too do i?

It's safer to do it by having the front up and free.

If youve got it on the deck, then loosen it and twat it with 'gentle' force, it'll all end in tears as you keep chasing mm's as it (guaranteed to) drops too far.

That and you can scratch the forks, etc, etc

You dont need to remove anything. The weight if the bike will help you push them through.

Will probs support it wi me massive axle stands that I bought for the swingarm change to make sure and do it wi wheel still on. Fridays day off project I think!

Oops I was going the wrong way.

You still dont need to remove anything though

Ooh, hang on paddy, yr right......the weight of the bike will take em down (the frame down). I suppose its technically dropping the frame and not the forks as the forks are coming up to drop them. I'll shutup now shall I!? :smt002 :smt001

So you want more lines up top then....I was going the right way.....

rereading my post about up and free,
I meant with the wheel on the deck and the suspension half unsprung. It takes a bit of the weight of the bike off the front so your taps can be more controllable. Youre gonna be doing it on your own i guess.

Yeah doing it on my own (might pop down to the old mans and rope him in like). Fingers crossed it works! :smt001
