Flasher Relays

OK, guessing I have blown it up (the relay).
Installed new Gabro chip last night, test run 10 miles, turning left, all lights, indicators, dash the lot dies on the spot.
Find it is a blown 15 amp fuse, replace & everything OK except when I turn indicators on, they just stay lit no flash.
So, looked in the book, no reference to relay position, type number etc. as far as I can see.
1./ anyone seen this sort of thing before???
2./ what the hell am I looking for in terms of relay, just want to take it out (test if possible & easy) then go to Halfords for replacement.
I have an appointment at HisNibbs this weekend, so need a simple solution.
(P.S. was playing with indicators the other week, changed fronts to Halogen bulbs, all has been well, was bench tested, then road tested with no probs. so either it is a wild coincidence or these fettling problems wait until you least expect it before they jump out)

Not too sure if that one will work, the ones on the Falco are two pin not 3, but it might work with only two pins connected. Also the Falco uses 4x10w bulbs not 21w.

I'd recommend an electronic relay instead.

OG I just noticed that you were turning left when it all went tits up. Did you have your indicators on?

My thoughts are that changing to Halogen bulbs has fused the mechanical relay together and then burned the fuse.

What wattage are the new bulbs?

If they are way higher than 10w I reckon that's where your problem lies. If the old relay is fused that about confirms it.

The flasher relay is under the tail section on the left as you sit on the bike nearest the back IIRC.

I'd test it by replacing a front bulb with the opposite rear bulb so you are back to standard on one side and try that signal, if it works it's good if it comes on and stays on it's bad and might blow another fuse.

Do both front and back indicators come on? Often when they come on and don't flash, it's a sign that one of the bulbs has blown (so there is not sufficient current flowing, so it doesn't warm up the bi-metal strip enough and the flashing never gets under way).

If it's not that then to check your relay - It's the rearmost one under the left side of the passenger seat (at least, that's what the workshop manual shows :smt002 - it's item 51 in the wiring/component placement diagrams and referred to as "Blinking")

EDIT: Ah hadn't read the Halogen bit .... My guess is fiddling with that hasn't helped .....

Yep, I guess fiddlin hasn't helped either & maybe could accept that but I did that 7-10 days ago, not had any problems to date.
System as it turned out was already using 23w indicators, so all I essentially did was replace front innerds with 23w halogen & whole complete new rears (23w/21w) standards.
All Was working fine until last night.
D-rider, if I select left indicator, both front & back come on & stay on so not bulb since both light, same if I select the right indicators, not all 4 on at once.
So, relay last one under passenger seat and 2 pin.
OK can it be tested, or do I just go to halfords with the old one & get a 23w replacement??

Could have sworn it was a 3 pin but it was a while back I still have it but it's now on the kwack if you can hang on until tonight I can tell you which one it was that I got from there

OK guys, struggling here, been to Halfords, new relay, installed same result, indicators come on (one front, one back) but no flash.
Wiring must be Ok since indicators light, same for switch since it transfers from right to left idicators, bulbs light both sides, so they are not at fault.
Now new relay, but still no flash suggestions please.

OK, back to Halfords, another new relay (incase 1st was duff) same result, stay lit no flash??????
Only additional thing I have thought of was bike came with an indicator buzzer installed, which is not making any sound now that they don't flash.
Can't see that would make any diff. to the indicator opperation, but thought i should mention it.

Put the proper 10w bulbs back in and see what it does. Non flashing indicators would make me thing either the battery is flat and not producing enough current to set the flasher flashing, or that the bulbs' wattages are too high which would give the same result, not enough current being drawn to set the flasher going.

Back to front Nooj - bulb with higher power rating - greater current draw - would flash quicker.

Though I'd still go back to the standard setup and start from there .....

Agreed higher watts equals higher amps P=IV and V is constant. Nooj, of all people with your previous genious with back light boards should know this. :smt020

I'm with you on the set it back to std and start form there. 10w bulbs and take out the buzzer. Then we can start to get into the problem.
