Bugger!

Left work a bit early today to have a blast towards Melton Mowbray then North of Loughborough towards Zouch and back down towards Tamworth before meeting a mate at Bassetts Pole...

...but when exactly half way (so 40miles from BP but 40miles into my journey) I was accelerating hard, went into 6th and crack! The gear rod was dangling on the floor having broken at the lever and hanging from the gear selector shaft.

So anyway I pulled over, managed to get her in 3rd and removed the rod and tied the foot pedal to the hanger to stop it flapping. The nut connecting the rod to the foot pedal had sheared... leaving part of the bolt in the threaded hole in the pedal. I've just managed to get it out (used a very small drill bit followed by a larger one to drive it out) which is a relief (I dont have a good history with removing snapped bolts!).

Now, do I need to get the entire assembly, or just a new bolt to fit inside the ball-joint end on the rod? If its just a bolt, does it have to be aprilia specific or would any one do?

Thanks in advance.

Are taling about part 8 inthe diagram?

I'd imagine a quick trip to a wreckers would turn up a suitable part, at least the bits are small enough to take with you to test fit.

Did you manage to get the ball out of the socket? How?

This has nearly happened to me - twice now the No 8 screw has unthreaded itself from the gear lever - I consider myself lucky it hasn't sheared in the process. It'snow secured in there with superglue!

Mine didn't come out, just snapped!

Anyway I have found a place that sells the stud, so-called threaded ball stud, and its around 50p or so... will be heading to a bearings/joints place during my lunch hour to hopefully pick some up.

I'll be buying a few and keeping them in the toolbox on the bike methinks!

Forgot to update - but fitted a complete new set and now works a treat... gear rod a lot less sloppy and gear changes a lot sweeter :)
