After suffering the ignomy, and expense of the side stand fallover I bought a replacement sidestand from that popular on line auction.

The replacement fit is plug and play, and as you can see in the "after" photo the angle is much better. But the stand is longer so the bike sits more upright than before, making it more unstable, see "after" photo. The bike is bog stock so why is this happening? The guy, who is local to me, says he will do me one 1/2" shorter no problem, but has anyone got any theories as to why its so upright?
I await the fonts of all Falco Knoweledge.

Mmmmmmmmm, was about to order one of these as well. It does seem that it is too long and compensates for the increased angle of the stand. Be interesting to see what others think. Is it because the Falco sits lower on the rear suspension linkage compared to the Mille/Touno, as he claims they fit all?

This whole sidestand thing is getting more and more confusing.
First we had the two different modifying plates, which most people agree on now, both were not that good as the stand itself was not ideal.
Then we had the the two main options, do you fit a Firestorm unit or a Gixxer.
Again two thoughts, but one thing both agree on, they are both better than the Falco and stronger.
Then we get the eBay unit.
I have one on mine, and it's fine for me -

First of all I forgot to take the before and after piccies, (sorry DR not up to your standard!), but here's the best picture I could find with the old stand -

Not a great picture, but as you can see the stand is very upright and does not spread out very far. Obviously the bike could fall over either way.
(and did for many people !!). This is how most people saw the old stand.
Others have looked at it and thought it didn't look bad, like Mango I think.
These people seem to have later bikes, so did Aprilia modify it themselves at some time??

I fitted the new stand off eBay, quite easilly, with only very minor mods to the belly pan and this is what it looks like now -

As you can see there is a major difference, the stand is at a much better angle and has a much better spread.

Scorpio24V seems to have had a different result from me.
Mine is on a Mille White Spring rear shock, but it is currently set close to its lowest setting, on slightly higher than my Blue Spring Falco unit.
I measured the two units off the bike by measuring the distance between the mounting point centres.
My old Blue Spring had the preload set up fairly high so would have been a bit higher than standard.

Is yours still on the Blue spring and how much preload do you have set on it?? Could this make that much difference?
Only other thing could be that the eBay units vary in length slightly and I got lucky.

Nope, mine is an '04 bike, and it's got (had!) the same piece-of-cheese stand as the earlier bikes - swapped it out for the Gixxer one. Much happier with angle-of-dangle, and the increased footprint it gives (increases the distance the bike's got to lean before tippover).

Only problem I've got with the Gixxer stand, the distance between the two mounting lugs is slightly more than the stock, so using it on the Falco bracket means it can move across the bike (on the mounting bolt) - fine when it's down, but when up it can "clang" the exhaust when folding up or moving. Just fashioned a (very thin!) washer to go between the bracket and the stand, so it holds it straight and angled away from the exhaust.

Scorpio, I wouldn't go for a shorter stand - it will make the bike tip further, but it will also bring the bike's CoG closer to the stand's foot - meaning it's easier to tip it over the stand (same problem as the stock stand) - I'd try and get one that kicks out further - increases lean towards the stand, but also increases the footprint.
