i`ve been slowly getting used to the bike, and generally tinkering.
As it had been dealer serviced a few hundred miles before i bought it, I assumed the oil level was close, I could see it wasn`t low.
checking it I could see it was a bit high, and there was some in the airbox, so got a mega siringe?
and syphoned off some oil, had to take 500cc out and I still have to go back and take more out! its only down to the high mark when cold at present. cant believe you could overfill it to this level
it must put seals and stuff under a lot of pressure, luckily i have only given it the beans in short bursts.
probably go faster now, as the engines only got to push the crank, and not forty gallons of crude!

You dont measure it at cold. The oil level window is a f***ing liar and a cheat. Warm it up on a short run, a tickover doesnt do it for me, then leave it half an hour.
I still dont belive it even then. I drain it and put the right amount in every couple of months to save me stressing about it. £7 filter £25 oil aaaaaaannnd relax.

Q: How the hell do I set the oil level? Sometimes its low, sometimes its high -- what's going on?
A: The Falco uses a dry-sump lubrication system. The sight tube oil height varies with temperature, pressure, rpm and the phases of the moon. I think the position the oil pump stops in may have something to do with how much drain-back you get. I've found that you have to stop trying to fixate on a given level, and keep your eye on the range. When the bike is hot and parked, you don't want the oil over the max mark. When it is cold and running, you want to see some oil in the bottom of the tube. Just try to maintain it in that range. Overfilling the oil just leads to consumption from blowing oil into the airbox.
From the great site that is

why can`t bikes be simple like cars and just have a dipstick?
same probs with my XR, oil in the frame, sometimes it goes off and hides, then when you put more in it all comes back

got the hang of it now, but sure its just trying to wind me up at times.

.
Some bikes do have them, you can find it on the seat.

That's usual for wet-sump bikes - the Rotax dry-sump engine is the reason that we have this fun-and-games

xrphil if you put your bike on its paddock stand and run it untill the cooling fans kick in at around 96 deg switch off and check your level after about a min you should be ok.

I`ll get there,
Paddock stand?
is that the 2 axle stands, with the bar through the wheel spindle,
or the two axle stands under swinging arm, and tie downs to hooks in garage roof?

Me too................... In 5 yrs of ownership I've overfilled on 3 occasions (not by much but enough)

I thought I had it sorted with filling to a certain point but no, the bloody stuff disappeared again, so now it's oil & filter change with exactly the right amount in on a regular basis:smt038
