The falco is the first bike I have owned with fuel injection so I am new to e chips and engine mapping etc.
I have just noticed that the bike has Leo Vince SBK exhausts that say titanium on them.

I have a couple of questions, as this is and aftermarket exhaust? Does it need

1 ... Another chip and engine map? How do I know if this has been done?
2 ... A power commander? Does a power commander fitted to a falco need to be set up on a dyno?
3 ... My fuel consumption is pretty appalling could this be down to the engine mapping?

PS ... I am mechanical imbecile please be simple with me!

1 - no, most after market exhausts are fine with the standard settings

2 yes - you can do stuff with a downloaded map but... if you fit a power commander, get it set up properly

3 possibly- what has been done already? airbox derestricted? ecu lead cut? and what do you call poor fuel consumption?

...but generally only if they have baffles in - removal of any baffles make the exhaust system even more free-flowing, and can lead to leaning the mixture too far (in turn, leading to engine damage). Similarly, if they're "not for road use", I would suggest getting a PCIII (if there's no manufacturer's chip) and getting it set up on a dyno

Not sure if they have baffles, how would I tell?

....so take a look at the rear/exit end of the can and look for an inner pipe probably held in place by a small bolt. That's a baffle. You may have had yours removed and will therefore only see a single outer exit hole and possibly a small empty bolt hole made redundant by the missing baffle.

You can just make out the baffle in this shot.

If you have no info and cant tell if the ECU has been opened (seals broken) an easy way is to remove the exhaust can and look in either end.


When you put a freeflowing can on, it can adjust how the engine behaves.. as FS said, it can lean out the mix at certain revs

if you look in the front bit, you will see soot, now it'll either be a lot usually black, a medium sort of amount, or sod all. the lesser amounts will be less black in appearance.

The large amount of soot indicates it's running rich, in this case at lower revs

A 'normal' amount of soot will indicate it's running right (think it'll err towards a browny colour)

Sod all soot tends to mean it's running weak. which is a warning sign that it's not set up properly..

Black can be mapping or lack of airflow (crap airfilter)

Brown.. should be ok..

Nothing... a lack of fuel.. it wont be too much air as an engine will only draw what it needs.

This relates to the 'exit' end of the can too, in the same way and same reasons, but relates to higher, top end revs

If youre overly worried, get it on a dyno with a gas analyser and let the dyno guys get some readings, they'll be able to confirm what state it is in, will probably be able to identify the chip too if theyre good..


Yes your PC will need setting up properly on a dyno. If you live in the highlands and set it up there, then spend most of the bike's life down south, you may need a remap.. Race teams remap for different tracks, altitude, etc does come into it.. on the road though, probably you'll not notice a difference, although it's always kinder to the bike to set it up properly.

Last q? Hmm.. Depends how you ride, the roads you ride on (hilly?) It could be down to mapping, see the above for running rich..

leo vince cans dont need rechipping, i have them on my bike, a bit sooty and the can exit, but ave of 38mpg who cares, and rich(sooty) is better than no soot at all.
Incidently may mates got an `08 GSXR1000 and when you look down the stock can(the sun was shining down it and we noticed) there was no soot at all, thats spot on fuelling for you. the leos and most other aftermarket cans dont have cats in em so they will be a bit more sooty as it dont get burned off.
A dyno run is the only sure fire way to make sure though circa 25 quid or free if you go to MCN live at Skeggy in Oct, see you there, and if it needs adjusting a PC is the way to go. But ive had the carbs rebuilt on the six so cant afford one

All good advice EdinburghFalco also check your cylinders are synchronized if not this will effect fuel consumtion and smooth running. I use this tool but others are availiable. Ken goes into it in detail here.

Don't have baffles in. I guess this is going to cause me hassle for the MOT?
Can you buy baffles separately?

MOT is up to the personal opinion of the tester. If he thinks they're too loud you fail. Use someone you know or........

I believe there is something called decibel killer or similar which are basically baffles to retrofit. Do a Google.
