Anyone considered cutting their OEM cans removing baffles etc and creating a set of stubbys?

Like most folk my originals are in a box on the garage shelf, I was wondering if
a, anyone has done it
b, Would it look any good (not got photoshop)
c, are there any potential probs with running lean etc?

I dont have time to actually do this at present, about to put in a new kitchen so will be amassing loads of brownie points over the next month or so.

Fastbiker or Futurastic or whatever he is known as now was reckoning to do a wee botch job on the Falco cans (it's just about all he has left) and turn em into underseat jobbies for his Futura. IIRC it involved shortening them and removing baffles etc.

Reckon it might not be a bad idea and would look really neat if they were turned into high level cans for the Falco.

I remember someone on the old Hadeler.net site, I think, might have been CPLUS, who carefully used a Dremel cutter or similar on the welds and opened the standard silencers up. He found them very restrictive inside, so he carefully made the route for the gases much less restrictive. This mainly involved a combination of drilling larger holes in baffle pipes and possibly chopping some bits out all together. He then had them stainless welded back together again an found a definate improvement, but it looked bog standard! He was left thinking could he have chopped out anymore, but thought that might be too obvious. Think he just ran this set up with the normal de-restriction and a K&N and was quite happy with it. From how he described it, it may have been difficult to retain much of the original baffles if he'd shortened the silencers as well. He just wanted something that looked standard but performed and sounded better.

I reckon low level MotoGP style stubbies ala R1 would look the Mutts nuts on an Aprilia.

Only probs could be the exhaust pulses ripping the can apart after a few months, But a well designed can would no doubt work. Im positive it would need the eprom changing to suit though. It wouldnt be like just chucking a slip - on on..

I have finished doing this on one can (not got round to doing the other yet). I cut both caps off, took out all the internals out and replaced them with a perforated tube and some exhaust packing (in simplified terms). The can is lighter than standard and is pretty much 'straight through' I have got pics somewhere of the process (ar at least some of it) I will see if I can post them up. Gonna pair them up wit an arrow or a rene chip when they are done, got both to try.
