Aprilia Peg Spanner

#1 Post by fastrider » Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:40 pm

Hi all,

Anyone know where I can buy (borrow even better), a Peg Spanner.
Reason, I have now, over a period of many many months and a fair bit-o-dosh, got all the bits I need to swap bits n bobs on my falco.

I have a 2007 Mille-R swinger and Ohlins shock to install, I was going to do it today, I thought that I would first double check I had all the tools etc I required, (good job I did), then found that I didn't have the said spanner. So job now on hold. :smt012

Tried looking on t'interweb but found nowt to do wi Peg Spanners.
Got 2 shops I can pop into tomorrow to ask, but not going to hold my breath.

As I'v said in the past, I'v never done any mechanical stuff like this before, and want to get it right first time. Did think of using a screwdriver/hammer to loosen the nut, but then I would not be able to tighten it to its correct torque setting afterwards..... ho hum.... :smt017

I made my own by taking an angle grinder to an old large socket. It worked pretty well but I am considering the 'option 2' erm.... option next time.

That is getting a BMX freewheel removal tool from a bicycle shop which I have read on this and other forums is the same size.

for example.... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10034

I am not guaranteeing this will fit but I am fairly certain.

This shop by the way is excellent with very fast turnaround and free post.

As Fausto says get a bycycle tool. I got one for a tenner, lent it to Torn then left the country so I was looking for one yesteday in Me;bourne and got it for $15. Perfect fit should do the job admirably. Way better than paying 60 quid for the Aprilia part.

Fausto, Falcopops, D-Rider:

THANK YOU very muchly :smt006 It never crossed my mind to think of bicycle shops.... amazing.... I owe you each a beer or three. :smt001

I am going to swap the stock swinger for the 2007 Mille one, and a brand new Ohlins rear shock. The front is having 2002 Mille-R Ohlins fitted to match.

I have ordered a new chain/sprocket set from Busters today, stock size (16/41). I normally run a 15 tooth front, but couldn't wait 3-5 weeks for it to be ordered/delivered.

Will check out a few of the mentioned places tomorrow. Thanks again.

Neil

Forget the beer - just give me that Ohlins front end :smt002

BTW you have investigated the threads on fitting the newer RSVR swinger I trust?
As long as you are aware of the additional challenges you face, that's fine :smt003

Good luck.

D-Rider,

Thanks mate. I have now purchased said peg-spanner from a bicycle shop for 5 quid (3rd shop lucky). The new chain/sprockets arrived today and my new Dunlop 208-RR's.

I researched on here many many months ago about fitting a new swinger (Mille New model), it fits perfectly if you use the Falco swingarm pivot bolt. I have also purchased Mille linkages for the shock. The shock I had to buy brand new :smt013 as I could not find a 2nd hand one on flea-bay for love nor money, so bit the bullet and got one with ride height adjustable and remote preload. The canister is horizontal, so should not have any space problems (I hope).

The front forks I got from a breakers yard and took them to be professionaly checked over and revalved to a guy just north or York, (ex Suzuki BSB Mech). He said they were almost brand new and perfect nick, so was very happy at that. These forks came complete with top/bottom clamps/yokes, wheel spindle and Clip-on's (which I can't use).

Just gotta find the time to do it now :smt001

Thanks again all.

Neil

Ah yes - shock linkages - known to fracture on the new RSVR. Have a look on the Tuono bit of this forum and see what Rich (Falco9) has done to guard against this risk.

Uh ... no .... it was the later swingarms that cracked but they were all contained within a time window .... if yours was definitely produced in 2007, I believe that it is not one of those affected (think they were 2005?).

Yeah. That n the RSV Ohlins apparently fired their springs out up a few riders arses once a certain speed was reached.
Dont think they did a recall either. :smt017
Best send it to me to check... :smt003
Two is the magic number... ;)

Fastrider you can use a RSV 16/44 option I think less 2 links if you still have the Falco arm, for a very close match to 15/41.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

Sorry but it certainly ain't 2 less links with a 16/44 on a Falco swinger!
Mine is just mildy geared down using a 16/42 set up, but has to use the standard RSV (longer) chain, but well towards the end of the adjustment when fitted, (needs shortening once bedded in a bit).
If you go to 16/44 you may need a longer than standard RSV chain.
N.B. standard Falco is 16/41 and a 44 tooth is a bigger rear sprocket.
I was thinking of possibly trying 15/42 (one tooth up at back, one down at front) and slightly lower geared than a 15/41 set up, so the chain is then pretty near standard Falco length.
(I am just applying simple logic, assuming that this will balance up).
Anybody else got any thoughts on where the adjusters end up with different set ups? A simple 15/41 will move the axle back a bit.

Hi HowardQ I think I now see an ambiguity.

When I said the RSV option I meant chain and sprocket kit. I got this a while back and had to remove certainly a link but I think it was two.

D-Rider, yea my brand new swinger is 2006 Mille model, and is def safe. My rear shock linkages are from a 2003 Mille-R I think (can't remember exactly),

Falcomunky, sorry mate, my OE shock is sha££%d now after 45000miles, and I am really looking forward to experiencing the difference this bit-o-bling will reveal to my backside.

HisNibs, HowardQ, to be honest I am not that au-fait with sprocket/chain length matching. I just tended to buy Renthal 15 tooth front and 41 or 42 rear. This time I actually bought a Kit. I was hoping/gabling on the the chain length being OK. The chain is standard 525 heavy duty x-ring.

On this matter of size, is there a formula or some other indidcator that you can use to work out the correct size chain for a given front/rear sprocket size set ie: 16/41; 16/42....44 or 15/41...44, or is it a case of one size (eg: 525) fits all and once fitted you adjut the slack in the usual way, and does it have any bearing on the type of swing arm fitted ? :smt017
