Starter Relay Issues!

Hi all,
Once upon a time in a dark forrest, long ago (Oct 06) a man bought a wonderous machine from down Mansfield area. Since then the gremlins of the forrest keep returning to haunt him! My frigin starter relay gave up, I duly went to aprilia, told me no clue when it would arrive from Italy! Got advice to try and buy a starter relay from Yamaha. Namely, an Hitachi MS5D-191 12V. Paid my £27.00 + vat. That was 4 months ago, the part looks alot smaller than the original one

Anywho, it gave up the ghost last w/end. Rang round a few aprilia dealers, non in stock, found Speedaway in Brum had one in stock, yippee I thought paid full whack for I thought to be a genuine aprilia part!!
Guess what arrived this morning in a small bag, a friggin Hitachi MS5D-191 12V. Will that mean it will only last another 4 months

Anyone know what part numbers should be on the REAL one and more importantly have aprilia just stopped making them. Or have the ppl at Speedaway in Brum just sent me a Yamaha starter relay and charged me full aprilia prices more like
Feel like I have been ripped off
Any help appreciated,
Warranty yeah rite!

I'd be ringing Speedway to ask them why they have sent you a non-std part when you have paid for a genuine Aprilia one.
Aprilia won't have stopped making them as they never manufactured it in the first place, it is a bought in item as is all the electric gear on all Aprilias.
I don't know the part number but you could look at :-
http://www.apriliayorkshire.co.uk/catal ... 02000-2003
This is offical parts list for the Falco
Demand either a genuine part or your money back!
In 18,000miles I never had a problem with any of my relays, so I'm thinking maybe there is an electrical fault on your bike that is causing these relays to fail so soon???
Sorry I can't help any further

am pretty certain the part cvoncerned is from a yamaha r1 - I know that I asked for advice on it either here or elsewhere and that was what the response was - though the reply did give the model number
sorry can't find the post now, but may be worth a google??

OK Aladinsaneuk,
I think I remember some post, as I had starting issues when I first got the falco back in Oct 06. Someone kindly mentioned that the R1 starter would fit my bike
Thankx for the info, shall ring yamaha in the morning, see if that is right, got part no: 4KD819400000. See how much it is and ring speedaway in Brum. Ask why are they selling a yamaha part, when I specifically asked for a aprilia part

Plus the price is double bar stools!
Let u know the out-come.

I stuck a yamaha one on my bike when I thought it was the culprit for poor starting (turns out it wasn't the cause

) but it was
a) cheaper
b) higher rated
It'll do the job fine as Falco9 said, the electics are all Jap anyway.
Your issue really is that they tried to kid on it was the expensive Aprillia part.

Hi all,
Yes, them at Speedaway in Brum, have stiffed me! They assured me it is the expensive aprilia part, thou I can buy it off the shelf at my yamaha dealer in ncle for £28.33p
They said it was the correct part for the bike and that they had no control over pricing as aprilia dictate the price, I was in a clients house when I took the call, so I couldn't voice my real feelings to them
Don't buy aprilia parts from them, more than likely a yamaha bit with their extra charges on top muther plukers!!!
Thanks 4 the help guys,

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Aprilia and Yamaha are both using the same relay - the Aprilia part number will conform to the Aprilia part numbering system but the number you see on the relay is the relay manufacturer's part number.
..... and it's not unknown for Aprilia to charge more for their parts (eg the various brembo bits and pieces)
Speedaway may indeed be telling you the truth (although I can't guarantee it and could be miles off the mark here).
I've always found them quite helpful .... however I must chase up the mille linkages I've had on order for months ...........
