As a way to put and full and final end to the debate on which colour is fastest I present to you the fastest land based vehicle on the planet......

Image

and behold, breaking the sound barrier.....On closer inspection it looks a lot like a black Falco.

Anyone else follow the whole thing on the web at the time? It was my first real venture onto the net (on dodgy dial-up) and following the progress of what was probably the last ever great achievement of our once-great nation was nothing short of amazing. Brings a tear to the eye to think back to what was achieved, oh yeah, and we kicked the multimillionaire yanks asses to boot and on a shoe-string budget.........I digress, black is fastest, no bloody question.

Problem with that argument is that if you'd seen the car before it got up to speed it was SILVER.
The paint must have burnt and turned black in the extreme heat, (just check the front of each engine in pic 1; Must be the last bit of paint to get the charcoal-treatment)!... :smt006
Two is the magic number... ;)

exactly.... we have black ones, because they are the fastest - the other colours just stay their normal, boring, slow, selves....

Right, I'm gonna get on me high horse here (and agree with TwinNut too)........what is the crack with the technological achievements going backwards. Fair enough the land speed record is a once in a blue moon thing and a brilliant one at that but what about Concorde? Yes, its an old plane but its achievement was brilliant and in its latter years (after the crash I hasten to add) was a massive money spinner for BA. The passion is there for these things yet noone acts on them. Concorde should still be flying or someone should at least have the bottle to build a new one. Surely the technology exists and has improved and we should strive to keep pushing the limits?? I suppose there are other things but I'm blinkered by concorde! :smt010

:smt017....what's going on here then? Surely some mistake.

This has almost turned into a British achievements love-in but once again I find myself aligned with the big Geordie lad. Your point is a very good one and I totally agree that it should never have happened. I was so incensed by the decision of British(?) Airways boss Rod 'Ozzy Bastard' Eddington that I had to go down to Filton near Bristol on Nov 26, 2003 to watch the mighty plane fly past and land for the last time. One of the most emotional days of my life which was added to by the inspirational sight of the still-flying Spitfire blatting it's way through the clouds. Despite the freezing wind and hail the massive crowd (which blocked the road and stropped the traffic) did nothing but cheer and cry........a very, very sad day and one which looking back felt almost like a precursor to the direction this once great nation would now take......apologies for the self indulgence but..........

Wasn't this a conversation about indicators..........

I'll see your concorde and raise you a Harrier!

Concorde was an impressive acheivement - but we did use the frogs to help... BUT, we developed the harrier and made it fly. Poor old uncle sam threw shit loads of cash at a similar project, that failed, then bought a harrier or two to rip apart and copy, and that failed then finally actually decided to buy some under licence and build them that way - no other country has made a similar aircraft as effective....

Oh, and when I get fuckwit yanks telling me that the Marines Harrier is one of the best aircraft in the world and it was an american invention, I really have fun with them :)

TwinNut.........what can I say but :smt004 :smt004 photos!

I watched it on TV and was and still am gutted about it. Amazing and beautiful. I remember seeing it at Newcastle airport when I was a kid and being in awe of it.

Harriers - yeah, fair point (although I don't know much info behind it tbh) but is it as elegantly pretty as Concorde? :smt002

This thread is gonna run and run now!! :smt001

Harrier? Yep, an amazing achievement BUT it's still flying, that's the difference and there were only ever 20 Concorde's. Plus you could actually go on one if you had few quid, you're not getting on a harrier too easily. But none of this would have been possible without the British genius that was Sir Frank Whittle.......and as far as planes are concerned don't forget the TSR-2, one of the most promising aircraft ever and the f****n labour government cancelled it and forever handed the advantage to the Yanks, some things never change, dickheads.

I beg to differ. those intakes look almost exactly the same as a Triumph TT600. :smt002

Gosh TN - we're all blushing down here in Coventry.

First you post up Thrust SSC - much of the project done in our fair city - Thrust SSC and Thrust 2 both residing in our motor museum (BTW, I'm off down there tonight with a spray can of Bronze paint to finish the job and cover that black undercoat).

Now you're bigging up Sir Frank Whittle a famous son of the city !
The closest primary school to work is Frank Whittle - named in his honour and, outside our motor museum (housing both Thrust Vehicles and the Thrust Simulator) are the Whittle Arches erected in his honour.
... and what with being the centre of the, once great, British motorcycle industry ....

Image

..... and now I'm wondering what's happened to me - a Berkshire boy waxing lyrical about Coventry - I must have lived here too long!
