But the Optimate says all is fine

As minime said, use a proper voltmeter on the battery, and check the reading both before and during attempted starting. If it reads less than about 9 volts when you try to start you need a new battery.

Just make sure the battery leads are really tight, I've had mine do that, ven though they looked tight, wound em up a bit more and started straight away, always worth a try before anything more complicated.

Mine did a similar thing in Wales but I would turn the ignition off then on again and it would start up fine. Its never done it again so I put it down the rain and snow we rode through that must have resulted in water somewhere it should not be. Have you jet washed the bike?

No Syltiz I am guilty of NOT washing it for quite a while....................
Will try the things advised, thank you very much to all of you, and will report back!

It could be poor connections to the battery terminals of course and that's definitely worth a try first. However, if the reading is only 11.7v, even after being on the Optimate, then I'd say the battery is shot. The dash reading should be around 12.5v on a decent battery.
