For the record, I got a new washer from my local spanner man - the wonderful John Carr near Preston - for nothing. A regular size they use on all bikes fitted OK and stopped the leak. Great news as I was worried I had a real leak. Yes, being lazzy I wipped the plug out and blocked the hole with my thumb. Lost a bit of oil

Are there actually washers on there? Just doing my oil change, and didn't come across one. That's not to say it didn't drop into the catch pan without me noticing it.
The bolt has a flanged head, does this negate the need for a washer? If not, guess I'll have to go begging tomorrow...

Answer is they do vary.
There were no washers on my 2001 Falco and the sump plug had a tapered flange so you could not use a washer.
When I changed the oil recently, the sump plug was really tight and took a lot of effort to untighten it. I have always been careful not to overtighten and done lots of oil changes over 7 years but..............
Anyway when I got it out it had a tell tale pick up of alloy on the thread right at the end. It did tighten back up but knew it would eventuall give up and managed to get a perfect oil tank off a yellow 2002 Falco for the silluy price of £25 off ebay, so I just swapped the tanks, (will get bthe other hellicoiled (eventually).
The 2002 unit did not have the taper, it was flat, but did have a washer.
Couldn't see evidence that it had been welded and re threaded, so I assume they made them both ways, backed up by comments on here.
Then again those custard coloured Falcos were always a bit different!
